CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS
"Anybody can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathize with a friend's success." -Oscar Wilde It is natural and understandable to feel pangs of envy when we see someone else get promoted while we may have not been; or to see someone else get a NAM and we were not recognized for our hard work. It is human. Life is full of many disappointments large and small, and it is tough to accept that others may enjoy greater fortune when we are equally deserving. How can we deal with such feelings of envy? First, it is essential to recognize that envy is an emotion that can be good or bad. "Good" envy can motivate us to keep on trying, never to give up the fight. "Bad" envy can lead a person to do harmful things to themselves or to others. It can eat away at one's inner well-being and leave a person an emotional, bitter wreck. Envy created the first murderer, Cain, who killed his brother Abel in a fit of jealousy. Second, we each need to consider the blessings we enjoy, not to dwell on the things we don't have. When I was aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT in an ethics class, we'd take a large overhead chart with a clean sheet of paper and make a dot in the center of the page with magic marker. Then we'd ask the students what they saw. They'd all say, a dot, of course. Then we'd tell them: here is this big paper, and you say all you see is the tiny dot?!!?! We must look at everything we have, not just the one or two things we feel are missing from our lives. Yes, it is hard to feel happy when others "succeed" where we have "failed", but we must never give up, nor allow ourselves to become bitter. Consider the example of my friend, a fellow Chaplain, who applied for commission as a Naval officer three times and was rejected each time. On his fourth try he was accepted and is now a distinguished member of the Chaplain Corps. Remember, when you feel at the end of your rope, make a knot and hang on!

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.
Psalm 130:7 & 8

The View from the Mountain
February 21, 2016
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above.
Colossians 3:1
Our valley in Idaho can be very cold in the winter. Clouds and fog roll in and blanket the ground, trapping frigid air under warmer layers above. But you can get above the valley. There's a road nearby that winds up the flank of Shafer Butte, a 7,500-foot mountain that rises out of our valley. A few minutes of driving and you break out of the fog and emerge into the warmth and brilliance of a sunlit day. You can look down on the clouds that shroud the valley below and see it from a different point of view.
Life is like that at times. Circumstances seem to surround us with a fog that sunlight cannot penetrate. Yet faith is the way we get above the valley--the means by which we "set [our] hearts on things above" (Col. 3:1). As we do, the Lord enables us to rise above our circumstances and find courage and calmness for the day. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Phil. 4:11).
We can climb out of our misery and gloom. We can sit for a time on the mountainside and through Christ who gives us strength (v. 13) we can gain a different perspective.
Although I can't always see You or what You're doing, Lord, I rest in Your love for me.

Faith can lift you above your fears.
Paul begins this section of his letter to the church at Philippi with the Greek word loipon (finally), signaling that this is his conclusion to the subject he's been dealing with. In previous verses the apostle has been urging his readers to live lives that are free from anxiety and quarreling. Their interactions with one another are to be marked by prayer, thankfulness, gentleness, unity, and peace. But his final word in this section goes beyond outward behavior. It deals with attitudes of the heart and mind. Ponder heavenly things, he tells them. Think well and deeply about things that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

Not much packing to do...I’ve been living out of boxes for 4 months.
It’s very humbling...almost monastic.
However, I’ve done a lot of practicing on guitar and keep learning new songs. Once I get to my new little house, I will have a small room that will be just right for music and the computer (that’s all that will fit in there! LOL!)
There is a Biker Church nearby, and it’s a denomination I like. (A of G) Not that denominations are that important, but I like knowing what I’m getting into! :-))

Sounds like you’ve been busy! WTG!!
Do you want to come to Alaska and widen the bathroom door? Mom’s walking is not going so well. I’m thinking of having a 36” door put in her bathroom. I think the vanity would not be in the way, but a bit of the end of the closet will be needed. By adding 6 to 8 inches she could get past the door. And backing out is something she might be able to do with some extra space...still not enough space to turn around, but it might do the trick.

Absolutely identify with the width of mom’s bathroom door. It goes with the territory for a golden ager whose mom is still alive (thank God!).
We had a live-in woman, 54, who had to go on and get a career of her own, one with medical and retirement benefits. When she left, we were saddened, but glad for her. It was at that time we had to put Mom in a great assisted-living apartment. But in the process, we did a lot of remodeling to enable her to stay at home for as long as possible.
She had to give up her Aussie and Chihuahua (but, wondrously, their new family brings them to see Mom once a week).
Here is enjoying another’s success: I coached HS baseball for 20 years, even though I was suffering from fibromyalgia. Then I stepped aside, and let one of my assistants have it.
With my successor’s youth and energy, I watched as he upgraded and beautified the baseball facility, enlisting the help of the whole community. It had been all that I could do to just coach the team. He took it to another level. I was so proud of him.
And then I watched as HIS successor built up the quality of our school’s baseball to the point where he won the state championship. Again, I was so proud.
Both of my successors did what I did not have the energy to accomplish. And it did me good.

We are told “You did not build that, someone else did it for you”. Our Founding Fathers built a strong foundation. Each generation puts a few more bricks rebuild the breaches made by those that want to tear the whole down. We each add something to the project.

Good evening, Mac, and a Blessed Lord's Day to the MacNessa family.
Trains running on time? Still cold?
A friend just sent this to me.....the warning starts at 3p Saturday. It is now 5:30p and not a sign of snow.
I'm "in town" and tomorrow is supposed to be 36 degrees. We will see.
