Of the 138 hospital trusts, just seven are still in surplus according to the 2015-16 third quarter accounts, which cover April to December.
The figures also showed a total NHS trust overspend of £2.26bn once ambulance, mental health and community services were taken into account.
Experts said performance was deteriorating at an "alarming rate".
The deficit is already nearly triple what it was for the whole of the 2014-15 - and means the NHS is on track for one of its largest ever overspends.
The figures - released by NHS regulators Monitor and the Trust Development Authority - cover 240 trusts in total, which between them they account for about two-thirds of the NHS's £116bn budget.
The rest is spent on other areas including GPs, drug prescribing, public health and training.
Adam Roberts, of the Health Foundation think tank, said: "These figures are beyond dire. A comprehensive national plan is urgently needed."
The situation raises the prospect of the Department of Health failing to balance the overall books, which would be a huge embarrassment given the extra money the NHS is getting.

Obamacare cut a major source of funds to hospitals..namely DSH-Disproportionate Share. Obama claimed this was necessary because Obamacare was going to be a windfall for hospitals.
Separately, IBM bought Truven and has now spent 4 Billion this year on healthcare software companies. Is that because Obamacare is steering Healthcare dollars away from hospitals and frontline health providers and towards backroom grandiose BIG DATA projects?

MOST hospitals are CORRUPT and will perform UNNECESSARY procedures just to inflate a bill. I've seen this first hand. Yes, one did save my life once but the inefficiency and manipulation of patients is disgusting.

The NHS is already the 5th largest employer in the world, after the US DOD, China’s Army, WalMart and McDonalds.
Their bureaucracy and bankruptcy will only get larger.
Trump likes them - because they will be an endless straw-man to beat with his stupid slogans about how great he is at running businesses.
Say for sake of argument that Trump IS the smartest businessman on earth, and he could actually run an American version of NHS efficiently.
He is also 69 years old. Sooner or later he’d head for that big boardroom in the sky, and some not-so-capable person would take over for him.

I’m not sure you’re tracking the subject very well. Trump essentially avers that he’ll continue the mandate and will make Obamacare better. He says the government will pay for it. And he says he’s not heartless like Republicans who let people die on the streets. Nothing about tort reform. Nothing about more doctors. Nothing about anything that will bring greater efficiency to the medical world. It’s all going to YUGE though.
Yes, stop the illegals and protect our borders with a wall, but don’t turn the country over to a dilettante.
