” to infantilize young Americans”

Just wait until the age is raised to 26 - the age at which insurers cover “children” because so many are still at home.

He should join the military. You can drink at 18 - on base, and serve the Country to boot.

Not since the 1980s.

:: law was passed (1985) to avoid being punished by the “National Minimum Drinking Age Act” (1986) ::

Which is further support for my consistent call to the individual states to simply stop collecting and “passing on” any and all federal taxes.

If the “average” American knew that ALL (yes, I mean ^ALL^) taxes are collected and sent to Fedzilla only to be redistributed (ex-distributed) according to a specified matrix by State, we would truly be aghast.

Even local sales taxes go through Fedzilla.

And, well, hey! If NY-state needs a few million more from that sales tax ante (and didn’t we see an increase in the Nevada sales tax revenues?) well, hey, New York needs it, right? We are “united” states, afterall! [Onion ober alles!]

I say, Molon Labe.

I believe a minimum drinking age was first instituted as a bit of a compromise in order to repeal prohibition. I don’t think there were notable drinking age laws before Prohibition.

Another Freeper with a nanny state attitude.

LOL! Raise the age to 21 for everything! No, 25! The age of maturity is getting higher, not lower.

You’re correct.

My idiot great-nephew (age 20 at the time) wound up in the brig at a Marine base for being drunk on base.

Uhalde says that because nearly all unofficial graduate school activities involve alcohol, he is not able to have a social life of form bonds with his peers.

All graduate school social activities involve alcohol???? LOL. I know all undergrad activities do but even back in my day, graduate school social life didn't revolve around alcohol. I guess its quaint that this guy is still fighting for his right to have a kegger in today's politically correct, anti-frat boy, alcohol = rape culture.

Thank you for referencing that article Behind Liberal Lines. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

Minimum age requirements for various federal offices aside, the only age-related protection that the states have amended the Constitution to expressly protect is voting rights as evidenced by the 26th Amendment. So the students lawsuit is meaningless imo.

Insights welcome.

Maybe we should look a bit closer to the emphasized section above?

I graduated from UCSD at age 19. My friends enjoyed bowling and skating at the indoor rink. No alcohol necessary. I turned 20 the week before I started grad school at SDSU. My 16 units of grad work plus 42 hours a week scheduled at Radio Shack left little time for socializing. The grad students in my classes were frat boys with access to filing cabinets full of exams from prior years in my classes. We didn't have that going on at UCSD. It didn't matter. Smashing grading curves is part of the fun. No alcohol handicapping my efforts.

He thought this was a PSA from the government directing him what to do:

“You wake up late for school man you don't wanna go

You ask you mom, “Please?” but she still says, “No!”

You missed two classes and no homework

But your teacher preaches class like you're some kind of jerk

You gotta fight,
For yer right,

To Parrrty”

“CAN:

* Serve in the military
* Be thrown in prison and/or executed
* Get married
* Have kids
* Buy and sell property
* Start a business

CANNOT:

* Drink

Ridiculous.”

I agree. Either raise the age of majority to 21 or lower the drinking age back to 18. I don’t understand why this does not violate the equal protection clause.

“Some federal policy caused it to be normalized at 21.”

It got to be 21 when the feds threatened to withhold federal highway monies from any state that did not cave to their will.

Did they change that? I only ask, because when I joined in 1987, the rule had recently been changed so that the base had to follow local law. In the U.S., that was 21. When I got to Korea, it was 18, and they had beer vending machines in the enlisted quarters. I think that there should be one single age for majority. You are either an adult with all accompanying benefits and responsibilities or you are not.

one age.

“Should be under control of the family.”

In some states, including mine, minor children can legally drink alcohol at home under their parents’ supervision. We let princess riverdawg at age 16 drink wine with dinner on occasion. She would take a sip to act “grown up” and then ask for iced tea.

Collegetown was fun in the 80s when the age WAS 18.

Except for The Nines, Collegetown is now nothing but coffee shops, bagel shops and yogurt. The Chapter House seems to be where graduate students and teacher aids hang out, but it is way more subdued than it used to be. And I can’t believe Johnny’s Big Red is gone.

Separate item:
There used to be a pizza place at the bottom of Dryden Road, in a basement level store. It had the best pizza in the world. Can’t remember the name...
