ABOARD THE PAPAL AIRLINER -- Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump "is not Christian" because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.
"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

I try to view it through an evangelical theological model and not get distracted by all the side activity, as if there were sins that were so bad that just to be near people committing them would damn you. Are the persons concerned putting their personal trust in Jesus Christ for His gift of eternal life. To (at least most) evangelicals this is a yes or no, not a maybe or a partway. Certainly in the evangelical theological model it is a yes or no. The life that is led by faith then provides proof of whether it was real. Christ has a way of blessing even stumble-bum sinners who are still in some way sincere about accepting Him. I know this as perhaps foremost among such stumble-bums. Yet I see a grace that I couldn’t possibly have earned and it becomes even more obvious in retrospect.
The people who get off on hobby horses either might not yet have done this, or possibly they aren’t very mature yet. Snap judgments can’t be made without some interaction and/or close observation.
The hierarchy is going to be the hierarchy and it will sometimes do weird things indeed. Respect should be extended to rank and file worshipers, who in spite of the harangues they may get from the hierarchy, may not really buy it in the end, and often who are earnestly searching for some real sign of God themselves. Or like many of the people that end up being deemed saints, they find Christ on their own and manifest unmistakable signs of it.
I sort of see... the actual small-d democratic activity that the US offers through a representative model, outclasses the place where they are. They just want bread and circuses with a nanny.
But just to say, there are bright lights even in South America (as well as dim bulbs). It would be more accurate to say the pope typifies the majority, than typifies the entire region. How the Vatican could do this with Benedict still living and there to warn them about how stupid this would be... boggles the mind. They could have picked a wiser South American, surely, if they had to have one.
It was hyperbole but I could have worded it differently...
Indeed... who got the “hell fire” and who got the hugs? It wasn’t always what would be obvious to a superficial observer.
I agree that it boggles the mind how the Cardinals selected Francis. But Pope Benedict was supposed to be on death’s doorstep when he stepped aside and he’s still alive so who knows what kind of machinations went on. Its a very strange turn of events to say the least.

And so many evangelicals approach rank and file Roman Catholic worshipers like “Hey you are going to get permanent spiritual cooties from that hierarchy if you don’t boogie out the door right now.” And this is a sad, gross overgeneralization, though some do act on that basis.
Sometimes Christians can’t see the forest for the trees. As someone who wasn’t even Christian reminded me after a particularly painful fit of spiritual angst that culminated in my renewal of faith in Jesus: Good is stronger than evil. Unfruitful means of worship or prayer will fade when fruitful ones appear and become obvious. God looks at the heart, at what is intended by the worshiper, and is saddened at the spiritual detritus, but does not damn on account of it because salvation is of Christ. He has an entire life to work with, not just a snapshot split second.
Surely he wasn’t incommunicado though. Maybe he was afraid of violating protocol in which the choice came down to the cardinals and a previous occupant of “Peter’s seat” didn’t say anything. Sadly, they had a set of cardinals with rotten judgment at that point. The selection model broke.
Told him off for being a hypocrite. As if nobody else ever has, and has lived to tell the tale.
Pope needs to be calling out Hillary Clinton for the crimes she has committed.
I watched a day or so ago when the Pope got testy because some Mexicans pushed too close to him. How does he think we feel? These are strange times.
I like Trump’s response and think he’s entirely correct that no one, not even the Pope, is able to gauge the depths of another person’s faith, much less state that they have none. Bad Pope!
Well there has been a lot of speculation that Benedict was forced out by reformers. Francis is nothing if not a reformer. His job is to usher in the gay stuff and communion for the divorced and civilly remarried. I personally am unsure of exactly how it all transpired. The Vatican is known for intrigue.
have always been respectful of the RCC, and will remain so, but they DID royally screw up by electing this guy. He’s an embarrassment to his position,.........
I am RC and very proud of it. People who do not understand the limits of Papal infallibility and have been comfortable with the previous few Popes, now have a Pope that makes them very uncomfortable. His statements and positions, his lack of dignity and illogical statements are embarrassing.
The solution is for all to educate themselves on the limited circumstances in which the Pope speaks infallibly. They need to understand that outside those limited circumstances the Pope is as fallible as we are and limited by his circumstances and his education as are we.
All of this current flap is just the Pope’s opinion. We are free to disagree.
