I sort of see... the actual small-d democratic activity that the US offers through a representative model, outclasses the place where they are. They just want bread and circuses with a nanny.
But just to say, there are bright lights even in South America (as well as dim bulbs). It would be more accurate to say the pope typifies the majority, than typifies the entire region. How the Vatican could do this with Benedict still living and there to warn them about how stupid this would be... boggles the mind. They could have picked a wiser South American, surely, if they had to have one.
I agree that it boggles the mind how the Cardinals selected Francis. But Pope Benedict was supposed to be on death’s doorstep when he stepped aside and he’s still alive so who knows what kind of machinations went on. Its a very strange turn of events to say the least.
