How Trump Bought the Conservative Movement
Accuracy in Media ^ | February 16, 2016 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 02/17/2016 12:54:38 PM PST by GodGunsGuts

It has become increasingly clear that the "self-funded" candidate in the Republican presidential primary, Donald J. Trump, will destroy the GOP's chances to win in November if he is not the nominee. Leftist groups are ecstatic over Trump’s "Bush lied, people died," mantra over the Iraq war. Internet trolls for Vladimir Putin are firmly behind Trump, saying he has the right recipe for accommodating Russia.

...

How did this happen? Conservatives who should know better went beyond praising his attacks on political correctness to welcoming him as a legitimate conservative candidate for president. Last year, Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU) and co-founder of Cove Strategies, a lobbying firm, went on MSNBC and was asked by Chris Matthews if Trump is a "plausible president." He said "Yeah. Definitely. Definitely." He also said, "I actually know Donald Trump," in regard to some of the businessman's other controversial comments. Such remarks sent the message to conservatives nationwide that Trump was one of them.

Ironically, Schlapp is the former political director for President George W. Bush, now accused by Trump of lying to get the U.S. into the Iraq War. How well does Schlapp really know Trump?

It seemed to start when the ACU declared Trump "an American patriot" and announced he was addressing the 2013 conference of the ACU-sponsored Conservative Political Action Conference. That same year, his Donald J. Trump Foundation gave $50,000 to the ACU Foundation. The Donald J. Trump Foundation also gave $25,000 to The American Spectator Foundation, the organization responsible for publishing The American Spectator magazine...

Nicky Haley isn’t a Conservative.

Duh, that's my point. She ran as a TP conservative and was elected as such...she then pulled out the knife and inserted in our backs.

Get it?

“How ridiculous? Trump is very far from being a Liberal Democrat.”

Not ridiculous at all, Trump is a big government guy and will say anything he thinks will help him, no conscience. See comment #69.

I also believe The Donald is mentally unstable. “I believe Donald Trump is an extreme narcissists, more extreme than obama. This is another case of Trump attacking Senator Cruz for his own, Trump’s‚ mental problems as Trump lies and then accuses others of lying. I believe Donald Trump is an extreme narcissists, worse than obama. The symptoms the Donald exhibits? Excessive use of superlatives instead of factual information, listen to him describe what he will replace obamacare with. Lack of empathy exhibited by mocking the afflicted and childish name calling. Not to mention his vindictiveness and rages. A narcissist will surround himself with two kinds of people those who pump him up and those he can put down. Trump should not be making Supreme Court or any other appointments, taking those 3am phone calls or have his finger any where near the button. And he calls Senator Cruz a liar and unstable.”

“Wow, you do catch on quick there FRiend.”

But you said the Conservative movement sold us out. When in reality, it was individuals like Nicky Haley who did.

From the article he was unaffiliated or independent for most of his adult life. Turned Republican then Democrat for a few years then Republican. So he tried Democrat and it did not suit him. I guess he finally found his true home as a conservative!

But Trump is an alpha, and alphas build walls and towers and all kinds of stuff. Don’t you know that? Never mind that inside he is an alpha child. He reminds me of Nimrod. Nimrod (The mighty one) built a tower; no not Trump Towers, the Tower at Babel. He was made king based on his greatness and he promised security. People looked upon him with awe. But the kingdom he built turned into tyranny. This same scenario repeats over and again throughout history and ends with the eventual breakup of the kingdom. And here we go again? Time will tell.

Sure, the hell storm following the launch of his campaign regarding the wall and immigration.
The whole world kind of noticed it.
Do you have proof you did not notice it?

LOL!!!

When looking up a full definition of a word, went to Mirriam-Webster and that was the “Word of the day”

gave it an unusual definition.

“a hunter or an idiot or jerk”

Whatever, who cares, so what!!!!!!

Take care.........pilgrim

LOL!!!

You first did not answer the question. If you don’t have a source or do not know......it’s ok to say I don’t have one.

I noticed he ‘kinda borrowed’ a view Cruz had posited earlier.

Would you know when Trump launched his campaign?

Leftist groups are ecstatic over Trump's "Bush lied, people died," mantra over the Iraq war.

Where's the evidence for that? Does Kincaid really think the left has been sitting around waiting for Donald Trump to validate them?

It seemed to start when the ACU declared Trump "an American patriot" and announced he was addressing the 2013 conference of the ACU-sponsored Conservative Political Action Conference. That same year, his Donald J. Trump Foundation gave $50,000 to the ACU Foundation. The Donald J. Trump Foundation also gave $25,000 to The American Spectator Foundation, the organization responsible for publishing The American Spectator magazine.

That may be more serious. Why do we have to wade through all the other junk to get to that at the bottom of the article?

“How would you describe this person?

Lawyer
Ivy League grad
Republican
Wife connected to Goldman Sacks
Borrowed money money from Goldman Sacks
Flipped flopped on H-1B visa
Has no position for a wall on the southern border.”

I know you’re talking about Senator Cruz so I’ll describe him as a Constitutional Conservative, I’ll also point out that your two Goldman Sachs items are stated in a way to elicit disdain and that he did change a position on the H-1B visas and that Senator Cruz HAS been a proponent of building a wall and protecting our borders.
So forgiving of Trump and unforgiving of Senator Cruz.

Tell me how you describe this guy.

In 1999, Trump said he had joined the Reform Party because Republicans are “just too crazy” right.
In 2000, he said: “I hate the concept of guns.”
In 2004: “I identify more as a Democrat.”
In 2007: Told Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s “The Situation Room” that Hillary Clinton was the most qualified to make a nuclear deal with Iran.
In 2008: Said he was “impressed” with Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and supported the idea of impeaching then President George W. Bush.
“I’m going to take care of everybody,” Trump said in September 2015 on CBS’ 60 minutes. When asked how he would pay for it, he responded that “the government’s going to take care of it.”
He thinks affirmative action is okay
He would fund Planned Parenthood except for abortion. (This is current federal policy, though Trump doesn’t seem to know it.)
He supports a progressive income tax. He does not favor a flat tax.
He doesn’t want to cut Social Security or Medicare.
He’s in favor of a ban on assault weapons.
He invited Bill and Hillary Clinton to his wedding.
He doesn’t “fully” believe in supply-side economics.
He hates the Iran deal, but he wouldn’t abrogate it after taking office.
Abortion
Then: On “Meet The Press” in 1999, Trump said he was “very pro-choice.” “I hate the concept of abortion,” he said. “I hate it. I hate everything it stands for. ... but I just believe in choice.”

Now: In an interview with Bloomberg Politics in January, Trump said, “I’m pro-life and I have been pro-life.” He said he believed there should be exceptions in cases of rape, incest or the life of the mother.

Guns
Then: In Trump’s 200 book “The America We Deserve,” he wrote that he “generally” opposed gun control but supported an assault weapons ban and a longer waiting period to purchase a firearm.

Now: At the 2015 NRA-ILA Leadership Forum, Trump said if he became president, “the 2nd Amendment will be totally protected.” He told the Web site Ammoland he does “not support expanding background checks” and said current background checks “don’t work.”

Healthcare
Then: In an interview with Larry King in 1999, Trump said he was “very liberal when it comes to health care” and that he believes in “universal healthcare.” Now: During his announcement, he called Obamacare “a disaster called the big lie” and said the deductibles were so high they were “virtually useless.”

Hillary Clinton
Then: Either Trump or his son donated to Clinton in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007, he invited her to his 2005 wedding in Florida, where she sat front row, and he’s donated at least $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation. He also said in an appearance on the Howard Stern show in the mid-2000s that she was a fantastic senator.

Now: On NBC on Wednesday, he called Clinton “the worst secretary of state in the history of our nation” and said she would be “a terrible president.”

Party affiliation
Then: Trump changed his party from Republican to Independent Party in 1999, and switched again to Democrat in 2001.

Now: Has been a registered Republican since 2009.

There are also some flips which haven’t necessarily been from left to right.

Jeb Bush
Then: In Trump’s 2000 book “The America We Deserve,” he called Bush “a good man,” “bright, tough and principled,” and “exactly the kind of political leader this country needs now and will very much need in the future.”

Now: On Fox News’s “On The Record” this week, he called Bush “pathetic” for his support of Common Core, said his immigration views were “baby stuff.”
