Caller: When Will People Wake Up?

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here is Wendy in Houston. Wendy, you lead off today. Great to have you with us on the program.

CALLER: Oh, my goodness. It is such an honor to talk to you. Thank you so much for everything that you do.

RUSH: Well, thank you.

CALLER: Thank you so much, and my children love your books, so thank you, thank you. Start with that.

RUSH: You bet.

CALLER: So thank you. Huge honor. I just want to call, because I'm listening to this, and I am a huge anti-establishment, cannot stand all of that, but yet I still don't get it with the Trump thing because he doesn't stand for our conservative beliefs and values, whereas there is a candidate who does. Cruz stands up for what we believe in, and he is anti-establishment. So I don't understand how Trump can continue to say these things, especially have the audacity to support Planned Parenthood and all that he did on Saturday, and still the people won't leave him who consider themselves to be conservative when there's a very viable option. So I'm hoping you can help me understand.

RUSH: Look, I'll say this again, and I need you to hear me this time. The majority of Trump's support base is not the Republican base.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: The majority of Trump's support base is not conservative. There are quite a few, but I don't think they're the majority. And if they are the majority of the Trump support base, it's a very, very tiny majority. His coalition -- it's really ironic -- the coalition that Trump has put together is exactly what the Republican Party has been telling us conservatives they need to do to win.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: While they have been blowing us off, while they have been lying to us, they've been saying, "No, no, we can't win with just you guys. We need to go out and get these --" Well, Trump's doing it, and they don't want any part of it. In the second place, remember Jeb Bush said that he was gonna win the nomination without the base. Guess who's doing it? Trump.

CALLER: That's right.

RUSH: So go figure.

CALLER: Exactly. But then Trump, I don't understand why people don't get more fired up against him, why people are not standing up against him and going with Cruz, who is standing up against the establishment, plus the values. What are your thoughts there?

RUSH: My theories are probably just the same as yours. You know, you've got any number of alternatives to Trump.

CALLER: Yes.

RUSH: And Cruz is the leading alternative right now.

CALLER: Yes. But he's just at 18%, I think you just said; is that correct?

RUSH: He's tied at 18% in South Carolina. But he's outperforming. In every election he outperforms what the polling says. I think Cruz is the -- ah, what's the term? He's the sleeper out there. It's Cruz that's sneaking up on everybody. Everybody's focusing on Trump.

CALLER: So what is it gonna take to wake everyone up to cross that line? If Trump comes in and makes it big in South Carolina in this primary, then what is it gonna take? Is it just a done deal? What do you think it's gonna take?

RUSH: To do what?

CALLER: To wake everybody up, to switch over --

RUSH: Wendy, I think everybody's awake on our side.

CALLER: Okay.

RUSH: This is what you gotta come to terms -- everybody's awake. And there are a lot of people -- you're putting me in a very difficult position here.

CALLER: Sorry.

RUSH: No, no, no. I'm not complaining to you. You don't know, 'cause I don't wear my blood on my sleeve. You know, I don't bleed and whine and moan and complain to the audience about things that happen to me because I'm bigger than that. But you would not believe the number of people that are coming at me as though all of this is my fault, that I could have stopped this way back when if I would have just been a leader, if I would have just done this or that.

I have been sitting around observing. I have been a conservative all my life. I've been doing this radio program as a conservative for 27 years. There is no doubt anywhere all across this country who I am and what I stand for. There's no misunderstanding. Well, there might be some misunderstandings among people that doesn't listen, but there's no misunderstanding that I am a conservative and that -- well, arguably, the Mister Big of the vast right-wing conspiracy. It's a challenging position I'm in here because there's some things I probably shouldn't say.

I've got two responsibilities here, folks. I've got my responsibility to you, the audience, which I put at number one. My responsibility to this program, my career, my job, not my career, but this is the thing I've chosen to do. There are all kinds of people who depend on me doing it and doing it well. That's my number one focus. I'm not the leader of the conservative movement. I've never sought that. I'm not denying any -- already right there, "Wait a minute. You mean you've been lying to us?" No, I haven't been lying to you. It's not my job to get votes for people, damn it! It's theirs! What more do you want me to do?

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: The best thing I could tell you, folks, I guess, as I assess all this, is this is not an election, with a competition of philosophies. We're way beyond that. People are not gonna rely on philosophy to accomplish anything. You can have the best philosophy in the world, I don't care what you call it, and it's not gonna mean anything if you're up against somebody who succeeds at making people think he's gonna break balls, kick butts, take names, put people in prison, fix the country, make the country great again, whatever the hell that means to people. You can philosophize all day long in competition against it, and we'll see you in the rearview mirror.

This “Wendy from Houston” sounded like a Joel Osteen follower. “Oh, Rush, what an honor! Thank you! Thank you! My kids love your books! Oh, my God! May I touch the hem of your garment?”

There is no such thing as a “CONSERVATIVE” any longer. The label DOES NOT EXIST in FACT because........

There is hardly NO ONE in politics today that ACTS on those beliefs.

This Republican, for his entire life, is surprised I am not considered to be a part of the Republican base. Though I must admit that I have considered changing my registration to Independent because I feel the Republican Party cares nothing about it's base. As an Independent perhaps I will also quit constantly being asked for contributions.

The conservative talk radio crowd, which I love listening to, may also lose my listenership.

The GOPE has disowned us. Thats how they can convince themselves that they haven’t turned on us and let us down.

Just how did Rush discover Rubio was Full Throated?

He watched a hidden cam video provided by the Bush campaign.

Rush believes in “making them legal, but not able to vote” ( yeah right, and he is for unlimited “Free Trade”. Tell me how he is a Nationalist?

Trump is the one who just retweeted a false quote attacking Cruz and then was deceitful enough to repeat it on stage a few hours later after it had already been debunked.

Never thought a day would come that I’d describe Rush as low info, but damn if that isn’t what he’s become. I seriously cannot believe how far he’s missed the mark in analyzing this election.

2 months ago I was a proud trump supporter. Now I’m holding my nose. Lately he sounds like Cpt Queeg. HEY DONALD, those guys in the audience might have been donors, but what you said about the Iraq war made everyone pissed.

I have always liked Cruz. He puts principle ahead of expediency. A year ago he was a hero on this forum.

Cruz doesn’t know what he’s doing. I know he’s the most conservative, smartest, etc. He keeps telling us things we already know. What he doesn’t tell us is how he’s going to beat the dems multibillion dollar slime machine in the fall.

That’s the least of it. He also will have to go against the America hating media. Also the gop’ers will betray him, like they did Sharon Angle, Ollie North, and how many others.

If I could appoint the best man for the POTUS Cruz wins easily. If I have to vote in a primary for a candidate to take on the slime in the fall, I have to go with trump.

Cruz can’t win the nomination. He’s only bringing out the worst in trump, and the dems are getting off. He needs to fold it up. This is not his time.

In the meantime I’ll hold my nose, vote for trump, and wish I could feel as good about it as I did a few months ago.

And Cruz said Trump wanted to “destroy the 2nd amendment”.

Trump basically said that Cruz is the right choice, but that he can’t compete against Trump because Trump has won over people who are so uptight at the GOP that they will vote to break the GOP, while voting with some number of liberals to get Trump in office.

Rush can’t say this, because he will turn off a large segment of his listeners and they won’t listen anymore, simply because he would have taken sides stating Cruz was who everyone must vote for.

When I heard that in real time, I wondered out loud if that is what Lib really sounds like, then I realized the caller sounded much mor eintelligent.

“Phyllis Schlafly endorsed Trump.

I trust Phyllis a lot more than I trust all the Johnny-Come-Latelies.”

I’m going to throw in with Rush and Levin and Thomas Sowell. I know, they are a bunch of dummies. And notice I didn’t include the NRO, who are now part of the establishment, or even Glenn Beck.

But I think, as does Rush, that there is no philosophical anchor holding Trump together as a conservative. So what you are left with is a kick balls personality cult that can obviously draw huge crowds. But Heck, I can get that by moving to Venezuela.

The one big problem I see with Cruz is that he will roll over for multi billionaire oligarchs that want immigration, gun control, and more jobs to China.

These are the guys that have more money than scruples and have played conservatives for years to advance their own schemes. They are why borders have never been closed.

They have their meeting with the candidates so they can be sure they’ll dance to their music. Trump already had his meeting and he told them that they don’t like him because they can’t control him (like they could with others)

Apparently not. Trump leading in 4 post-debate polls. No change. Cruz is tied with Rubio or else in third or fourth place.

“Trumpoons”

That’s a new one. Did you make it up yourself, or did you hear some other Cruzer say it?

(note that I didn’t use an epithet to describe Cruz supporters).

You must know that, the more epithets you guys hurl at Trump supporters, the more desperate and crushed it makes you look, right?

Hush thinks RINO Rubio is a full throated conservatism and is too dishonest to tell his listeners that Trump is beating Cruz with conservative voters, as in New Hampshire.

“The majority of Trump’s support base is not the Republican base.”

I think what he means here is there are more independents and democrats who support Trump than Republicans.

This is not a bad thing. No other Republican since Reagan has been able to do this.
