Reagan’s embargo and quotas on foreign car imports are credited with saving the domestic auto industry.
Says the guy who doesn’t believe corporations raise their prices if they can get the government to favor them with a tariff.
Actually, building a quality product saved the domestic auto industry.
I never said that, domestic competition will keep prices in check. Prices for domestic made products will be slightly higher then slave made products. About 4% higher. But when you factor in the quality of Made in the USA products it is actually cheaper for the consumer.
You never said it? Riiight.
I’ll say it now. That is a desirable affect of trade tariffs. I want domestic manufacturers to have a higher profit margin than the imports. That is a good thing. It promotes domestic competition. So that is a transitory pricing phase as more domestic factory capacity is again utilized and prices return to pre tariff pricing.
Ok, so before we rescind NAFTA, you rescind your comment #258.
Companies do not pass on the production cost saving on to their customers. That is not what happens. The stock holders will not have it. I will not, cannot, rescind the truth. That is not possible for anyone to do even Obama can’t do that.
Ok Vikings is over.
It’s simple trade deficits should have limits. Not just per nation but in total.
Produce and raw materials should be counted.
Any nation that is or supports hostility to the US should be embargoed. (Think China and N Korea.)
Any country with a measure able population of illegal immigrants in the US should pay a tariff equal to the expense of US taxpayers.
Any product dumping should result in 100% tariff on goods from that nation for a period of time. (Are you one of the commenters on what the Saudi’s are doing to domestic oil production?)
If we dry up the illegal immigrant counterfeit labor pool demand will take care of the living wage issue.
More government control of the economy. That's his answer.
So Trump wants to make it more expensive to do business in Mexico? How about making it less expensive to do business in the United States? Again, Trump tells people what they want to hear instead of offering real solutions.
Yes.
It sure does. Big companies like regulation. Small companies, not so much. I think we should reward companies with special privileges and benefits for keeping their operations in the US and hiring Americans. We don't have to punish the ones who move out, but we shouldn't kiss their ass either.
Trump should get a copy of Nafta Trade Bill and burn it in South Carolina!
The President can label any country a currency manipulator, and demand they stop. It would almost certainly provoke a trade war where in the tit for tat, Trump could impose any tariffs he wants.
If not, the President, controls the International Trade Commission, and appoints the Commissioners who rule on Section 751 Complaints (dumping by foreign countries).
Basically Trump announces that everyone who has been economically injured by imports from Mexico since day -1 of NAFTA, or whatever, should get down to the ITC to plead their case.
Then Trump’s ITC commissioners uphold every single complaint and start imposing gigantic tariffs on everything coming in from Mexico, including pickup trucks, cookies and HVAC equipment.
There is also Section 201-203 in the Trade Act with more grounds for the ITC to rule in favor of US interests injured by imports and impose trade penalties on the offending country.
like i say, the President has great authority in this area. All that is required is leadership.
Around the time we knocked down the statue of Hussein in Iraq. I think it was about 2003 or so as the Trane AC man was putting in a new unit when that statue fell that the truck traffic here doubled due to NAFTA. It was trucks hauling goods from Mexico not Mexican drivers. I do recall Tennessee was giving Drivers licenses to illegals. The truck traffic went up with NAFTA as many appliances and other items were made in Mexico. It was approximately then.
I pulled up the NAFTA document/report that states the other countries are to have their roads open to the others vehicles/trucks by 2000.

Why?
Any country with a measure able population of illegal immigrants in the US should pay a tariff equal to the expense of US taxpayers.
I'd rather just boot their illegals.
Any product dumping should result in 100% tariff on goods from that nation for a period of time.
Could you define product dumping?
(Are you one of the commenters on what the Saudi's are doing to domestic oil production?)
We consume much more oil than we produce. $30 oil is a net benefit to our economy. $100+ oil would be very harmful to us and helpful to our enemies like Iran and Russia.
If we dry up the illegal immigrant counterfeit labor pool demand will take care of the living wage issue.
Yup. Git 'er done!
He is funny when he tries to discuss economics.
