It must be more than a decade ago when I got a glimpse of the man often referred to as "George W. Bush's smarter, younger brother."
Charlie Cook and I were scheduled to speak to a group of Florida business leaders during lunch, but before we began our shtick, the state's sitting governor, Jeb Bush, was to offer some remarks.
Bush was running late that day, so when he finally arrived he blew into the room like a summer rain squall. He sat down, a bit out of breath as I remember it, and quickly turned to the group's executive director to ask what he should talk about.

It is now siesta time for the Jebster.
Nothing happened to Yeb Bush. Same as he ever was.
He must have run out of free turtles.
Spoiled little boy that wants his way, it’s my turn!
Jeb is the quintessential example of a guy campaigning for an office he wants no part of. A guy living under a bridge in spaghetti junction would mount a far better campaign than has Jeb.
he blew into the room like a summer rain squall?
Sounds like the intro to a romance novel.
The Bush clan is over-rated because they are products of the upper crust. There are many more talented citizens who are never heard from in our society because they don’t have the preferred pedigree. Example: Al Gore
It was very stupid of him to decide to turn liberal in a Republican primary. He should have ran as a conservative first and then turn left AFTER you win the nomination.
This is what all the sleazy RINOS do. People like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Lisa Murkowski and many others do this during primaries and the sucker voters fall for it every time.
For some reason, Jeb actually thought Republican voters would accept his liberal policies (after living through eight horrible years with insane liberal Obama).
Nothings changed, he’s still the same ol cockeyed jr.
The only thin different is that they cant hide it any more.
You always know when ol Jebs been around, the toilets broke
and the cats pregnant.
Hey at 6’3” he’s the tallest of the candidates
Rothenberg missed the elephant in the room.
The rule-of-law republicans were offended by Jeb describing a crime as “an act of love” during eight years of Obama’s lawless policies.
The protectionist and isolationist republicans were joined by unemployed republicans and those with friends facing job challenges in being offended that Jeb would support importing and keeping illegals who compete against real Americans for jobs.
The small government and pro-capitalist republicans were offended that Jeb supports the presence of 41 million immigrants, with no interest in the cost of education, welfare, Obamacare, and other government programs for them.
Who likes Jeb, besides him mom? Mostly the Chamber of Commerce republicans who want government to provide cheap labor for their businesses, and there just are not enough corrupt voters in the GOP for Jeb to win. He should have run as a democrat, where corruption and criminality are considered virtues.
So are you saying we need to hear more from Al Gore?
Trump has brought out the real Jebe for America to see.
Christy brought out the real Rubio last night in the debate for America to see.
Jeb was never smarter. Dubya went to better schools and got elected first. Jeb! couldn’t even win in 1994, when Republicans won across the country.
Sure, the media tried to call Dubya dumb for his demeanor, but in reality, it was an act, and it worked; the media fell for the southern guy thing George did, and helped remind voters of the media’s elitism.
Leaving immigration aside, part of the problem with him as a “wonk” is that the “wonk” approach is just fundamentally discredited. This assumes that the system can be managed and tweaked to obtain results. As with education policy, which was Jebs big thing.
The trouble is that government policy in general just does not seem to work as expected, ever. The unanticipated consequences are always bigger than the objectives, and the execution of policy is in the hands of systems that mutate them randomly. It does not matter what the objective of a law is, it will be captured and modified to suit the requirements of random actors playing the bureaucratic-regulatory game.
It’s like, in Jebs case, he is claiming to be a great pilot, knowing all the cockpit controls, but the fact is that the cockpit controls are disconnected and the control lines are being moved by gangs of gremlins playing tug of war. The plane is out of control.
As for instance with education. Seventy years of large scale experiments in reform, from both left and right, have improved nothing (improvements here and there are trivial), and arguably we are worse off. Nobody knows how to reform this mess, even Jeb Bush. If he thinks he has fixed anything significant in Florida hes delusional.
Alarm bells go off right there.
He's running late? He can't manage his time.
He doesn't know what he's supposed to talk about? He's "winging it" without knowing what he really has on his plate.
He does a good job with an off-the-cuff speech? He probably believes that he never has to work or prepare for anything: "I'm always ready for anything."
Managers who do this sort of thing will always crash and burn at some point.
I don’t know about that turning left after you secure the Primary, Trump’s done it and his loyal “flock” are still worshipping at his feet!
One reason is that Mama Bush and Papa Bush and GeorgieW Bush had that "aw shucks" routine down real well. Then along comes Jebbie who doesn't bother with that. With the surface scratched, it's now quite easy to see right through them.
Wish they'd just go away to Paraguay or where ever it is that GWB bought the ranch.
The article falls into the ocean at the very beginning.
On these very forums there were more people calling Yeb! GW’s dumber brother than there were people thinking he was smarter.
The leftist press loved the turtle. The public, not so much.
And the public has Schiavo’d Yeb! against the press’ best efforts.
And the saddest thing is, Jeb ‘ s spawn is dumber still.
