Ted Cruz Reverses His Support for Chief Justice Roberts

The senator's comments also marked a sharp reversal for his support of Roberts in 2005, BuzzFeed reports.

The report cites Cruz's support for Roberts' nomination in a 2005 op-ed piece for the National Review and an internal memo he wrote as Texas Solicitor General praising Roberts' skill as a litigator.

"I’ve worked with John and seen him argue numerous cases, and, to my mind, there’s not another appellate advocate who’s even close," Cruz wrote.

I can’t wait to read the new round of tweets this morning. DT must be exploding = how dare a poll put him at 25% nationally? How dare Cruz and Rubio be tied 4 points behind? How dare anyone call him a sore loser? Does he need to say “wall” a lot today?

You Gope-ers sound just like the Democrats...Like one of them little rat dogs yapping at your pant legs...

But I don't know of a single conservative who was warning about Roberts. He had a solid track record. I thought Janice Rogers Brown would be better, but there was nothing negative about Roberts.

According to Cruz's words in the article there really wasn't a track record that could be followed...They relied on references and opinions of people like Cruz...

How this is labeled a flip flop after 10 years is silly. No one new about Roberts until the obamacare case.
Cruz should be clairvoyant 10 years out.
Trump trashes Scalia December 2015 - Not one Trumpee cares.
Is there anything right about this picture?

What about last month when Trump bashed Supreme Court Justice Scalia because he was against Affirmative Action?

1. Scalia is a terrible Supreme Court justice.

When you guys have to make things up to try to make Trump look bad, to make Cruz look better it shows you have no more integrity than Cruz...

Trump did NOT bash Scalia...He merely disagreed with him...Trump nor anyone else said Scalia was a terrible Supreme Court Justice...You made that up...Just like Cruz made up the lie about Carson...

I think Roberts had enormous pressure applied to him to get him to change his votes in some cases, and that could have been the least things held over his head.

I worry that Cruz supporters (including me) could be wrong in our belief that Cruz is a genuine conservative. I worry that Trump supporters (and Trump is my second choice) could be wrong about Trump being the right person for the job at this critical point in our history. We always have to judge based on external evidence, and sometimes we are wrong. That’s costly but unavoidable.

I am concerned that as we know every one of Cruz's major supporters is huge on the foreign, green card workforce... Cruz had been pushing a bill he created to accomodate that cash cow to the tune of millions of green card immigrants over the next 10 years which of course will prevent that many Americans from receiving those jobs......

Cruz seems to have flipped on that issue...It's hard to really pin him down on a position but I suspect if he wins, he'll flop back on that one...

I was for Cruz big time coming out of the gate but now I see Cruz's big gig is to get us to more of a constitutional gov't which seems to be meaningless if he works to put millions of Americans out of work...

Trump on the other hand is trying to restore America and get those people back to work as well as many of the 95 million who have given up looking...I don't believe Trump will flip flop because his ego is too big...He's told us what he's going to do and come hell or highwater he's going forward...His ego won't let him fail or flip flop not to mention his love for America...

Such flip-flopping is irrelevant. None of us really know how “our” candidate will act in office until in office and performing. Anything up to that point is, for the most part, speculation. We attempt to surmise how they will act in office based on past or current behavior, but never really truly know until it is too late. Hell, many pubes were happy to see Roberts on the bench. Now, not so much.

Boy, HOWDY!

I haven’t heard ANY candidate, let alone politician, using the authority they HAVE to right the wrongs of SCotUS.

Course, that would mean Congress would be ‘responsible’ and they could not longer just shrug their shoulders saying, “We TRIED!”.

“Both of them have now FLIP FLOPPED”

Maybe they’re taking their cues from Trump, the ultimate flip-flopper!!

Re: “Cruz advised Bush against amnesty in 2000.”

True, but in a politically deceptive way.

In 1999, Cruz advised Bush to say, “Not at this time,” if Bush was asked about Amnesty in the upcoming Republican Debates.

After Bush decided in favor of Amnesty in 2005-2006, I want to know what Cruz said about that.

As far as I know, Cruz wrote nothing, and said nothing, about the Bush-McCain Amnesty.

If Cruz actually opposed Amnesty, why did he fail to comment on the most intense internal domestic debate the Republican Party had during Bush's eight year presidency?

Every major donor to every candidate is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and so could be considered a likely supporter of all sorts of government overreach. That is, as you say, everyone except Trump. I'm not willing to conclude that Cruz will be the bought puppet of his big donors, but it is and ought to be a concern with him as it is with everyone who is not self-funded.

On the plus side for Cruz, I am firmly convinced, based on his background and his consistent positions on key issues, that Cruz will make the best Supreme Court appointments of any candidate. That includes Trump (with the exception that Trump could appoint Ted Cruz to the court for life, and I'd love to see that!).

Wow.

So in your world you have to be unethical and suck up to vile corrupt people to run a large business. Personal gain comes first. Got it.

Those were quotes from nopardons...

Nopardons was going on about Cruz flip flopping on Roberts so I quoted nopardons own words from back in 2005 calling him/her out as the hypocrite he/she is...

Yeah, it’s almost as bad as going out and lying to another candidates delegates.

Thankfully Ted apologized for acting like a jackass though, so I guess it’s all forgiven right?

And buy the way, I mentioned that he had 22,500 employees, and those employees count on him keeping things rolling.

1 vs 22,500, and yet you personalize it as if Trump was the only person benefiting.

Why do you always use corrupted arguments.

A President can propose, lobby for, and sign legislation. A President can therefore support stripping a given matter from the appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. This is one of the powers of the Congress.

Cruz and Trump should start repeatedly reminding voters what a disgrace Roberts is. That will result in questions being asked of the establishment about Roberts and when the establishment starts giving their wishy washy responses it will remind republicans exactly what we dislike most about the establishment.
