As one listed as a potential delegate for Rick Santorum from Tennessee, I wanted to say a few words since there are reports that he will possibly be dropping out this evening (and I will be out of pocket for much of the evening, including the time of his supposed announcement).
I have been a Rick Santorum supporter for years. I make absolutely no apology for that. Over the years he hasn't just talked the talk, but he has taken the arrows. He has had the courage of his convictions. He's taken the arrows from the left perhaps more than anyone out there. If you doubt that, look up the word "Santorum" in a modern culture dictionary.
For social conservatives, he is still the gold standard. Social conservatives have been the red-headed stepchildren of the Republican Party for a long, long time. We know that he has stood for our values even when it has cost him. When asked the ludicrous question by one of the moderators of a recent debate about why he didn't attend this year's March on Life, he responded (in part): "Well, I've been to the March for Life for about 25 years and I thought - I think that's a pretty good record," he said. "Spoken at it a few times and I have shepherded every single piece of pro-life piece of legislation that's passed over the last 20 years. I've either authored it or shepherded it through the United States Congress and I'm pretty proud of that record too." He has walked the walk. Twice he and his wife were counseled to have an abortion. Twice they refused. Gabriel and Bella were the results.
Among his legislative legacies are the "Born Alive Infant Protection Act", the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act", the welfare reform bill known as the "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act", the "Syria Responsibility Act", and the "Iran Freedom and Support Act". Rick was also a member of the "Gang of Seven" who targeted the waste and fraud of the House Post Office and Bank (to the consternation of his colleagues). Rick was rewarded for his hard work on behalf of the American taxpayer, consistently being named as a "Friend of the Taxpayer" by the National Taxpayers Union. Rick Santorum was the only candidate to initially receive an "A" grade by NumbersUSA on immigration. A Washington Post wrote that "Santorum was a tea party kind of guy before there was a tea party."
Santorum has correctly pointed out that the biggest correlation with poverty has been the breakdown of the nuclear family.
He has also been a strong advocate of blue-collar families. While the Party spoke almost entirely about small and large business holders and creators, Santorum spoke for the job holders within those businesses. These often do not have as much time or resources to get involved as others, but Santorum has spoken for them even when much of the Party had other emphases.
Rick has been consistent today, yesterday, and every day. You may not like him, but you know where he stands. He has been consistent when it was popular to be so and when it has been unpopular. He has been a voice of encouragement, often a lonely voice in Washington, for decades. He has taken the arrows for it. He could have taken the easy road. He took the hard road. There is no one in politics today that the radical homosexual community hates more than Rick Santorum. Some politicians have positions. Rick has convictions. Rick has stood his ground and paid the price.
It has been a great honor for me to be able to say that I have supported him for President.
Rick dropped out.
Santorum is a good man. Just not cut out to be POTUS.
I supported him last time, too!
I’ve always liked Rick Santorum. I would have voted for him if he had been nominated. I hope he’ll consider running for Senate in VA.
I genuinely like Rick. Don’t know him as well as some of my friends, but they tell me he’s the real deal.
Nice write-up! It must be very discouraging to work to try to get someone that you like so much elected, but to not get much traction. Keep up the good fight!
I wish him well. I wish you well, too.
He’ll endorse Trump. Both are scheduled for Greta tonight and Santorum has “an exciting announcement.”
Santorum is a good man, and the guy is a hustler. I mean that in the good sense. He made his career hitting his district door to door and outworking his opponents. I respect the hell out of anyone that earns it the hard way.
Wonder if the announcement is that Trump has selected him for his VP candidate.
It’s too early for Santorum to drop out. Their are no really good choices.
He would be among my top three choices. Hate to see him drop out.
And he is the only Presidential Candidate I have ever donated to.
I have a lot of respect for Rick Santorum. I wish all good things for him and his family.
I have always liked him and hope that he finds happiness in his heart with whatever he does next!
“Santorum is a good man. Just not cut out to be POTUS.”
Ditto, that.
I eagerly await to see Dan Savage burn in Hell for what he did to Santorum.
