The Texas senator insists he's never favored a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants, but many of his old colleagues say that's not true.
For Latino Republicans who have known Ted Cruz over the last 15 years, the candidate stumping across the country on an anti-immigration platform is not the rising talent they once worked with on the George W. Bush campaign, in the Bush administration, and then as Texas Solicitor General.
The Ted Cruz of those years was a whip-smart and audaciously ambitious lawyer who lent his considerable intellectual heft to the policies many Latino Republicans cared most about, including immigration reform. But during a CNN debate in December, as Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio clashed over Cruz's past positions on offering legal status to undocumented immigrants, Cruz said definitively, "I've never supported legalization, I do not intend to support it."
Weeks later, Cruz doubled down, explaining to Fox News' Bret Baier that he tried to amend to the Senate's "Gang of Eight" comprehensive immigration reform bill not to pass it, but to doom it to defeat. "Bret, you've been around Washington long enough, you know how to defeat bad legislation."
And with that, Cruz's bridge back to his former colleagues in Latino Republican circles began to burn. "It's just a flat out lie. Period," said Robert De Posada. "There's just no truth behind it."

Excuse me while I throw up. I will GLADLY take Trump or Cruz. Please make the case FOR YOUR CANDIDATE instead of sticking daggers in the back of the other guy.

The poison pill is the one Cruz is trying to shove down the throats of voters who oppose amnesty and want to see immigration law enforced, and sensible levels of legal immigration.
And Cruz's tortured attempts to explain his flip/flop from supporting TPA/TPP to claiming to oppose it (after he stuck his finger in the political winds of the campaign) are no more believable than his attempts to explain away his past support for legalization of illegals and large increases in legal immigration.
And this article shows that his support for amnesty and high immigration goes back many years.
I can support Trump, but those who do not support Cruz for the most part seem to be easily manipulated with campaign rhetoric and untrustworthy, highly-edited news media sources of the abortion-loving, leftwing kind.
Cruz has ALWAYS stood firm on conservative principles for his political career even when it was very unpopular. He is what most Free Republic members have been demanding of our representatives.
I remember when Rubio and Carson were Free republic darlings. But they did not stick to conservatism on some issues. For Cruz there were a couple of issues debated here, but for the most part, members of this forum have seen Cruz as one of the most consistent conservatives in Washington.
I feel like many less conservative participants have been emboldened by Trump but have forgotten how many times we have been fooled by people who gave us high hopes. Cruz is NOT that guy. I am not saying Trump will be, but I would like to see conservatives get better commitments from him before giving him the nomination. He still makes me very nervous personally. And some of his comments have not helped assure me of his commitment to conservatism.
Regardless, I am unchanged. For me it is Cruz, Trump, or both.
Why don't you just copy and past Cruz's comments about immigration policy from his announcement speech? It would involve only a very few lines.
FWIW< I was shocked to see Cruz’ website has pages of Spanish garbage.
Did any candidate call him on it? Sorry but I am watching the Trump event but would love to know if he was called out on it. Did Kelly say, “Hey Cruz, you are wrong and here is why?” Oh no that’s right she only does that to Trump.
âIâm telling people to vote for Gary Johnson, a third party candidate, the Libertarian candidate for president,â de Posada said, from his office in Madison, Va. âAnd Iâm saying if you canât do that then donât vote. Latinos should not vote.â
De Posada, who is openly gay, believes the critiques of his political handiwork quickly grew ugly and personal because of that fact.
Just could smell something “untoward” about your posts. Libertarian is it? Happen to be a Gary Johnson operative and FreeRepublic disrunpter?
Not this crap again. Ted has answered this over and over. It’s been explained to the low information crowd. Y’all should have gotten the memo by now.
Which policies of Trump’s make you want to support him?
Not this lying crap by Trump-haters...

“Letâs all fight for the guy who gave $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation instead! YEEEEESSSSS!”
Are you for real? Giving money that is used to help children and people of need is a bad thing suddenly. That money isn’t for the Clinton’s but for global use for the poor. Sheesh, I thought we wanted people to donate instead of having our taxes go to this type of thing. Never thought I’d see the day where donating to a charity that helps people would be bashed. Different times I guess. Oh by the way, your cheap ass candidate gives 1 percent a year. That is the tragedy.
“... Now he is attacking Trump at the behest of his open-borders establishment masters.”
Cruz is open borders? Really? You are either misinformed, or you’re a liar. You’re either ignorant or lying. Which is it?
Trump said what Cruz had three months earlier? Obviously Cruz used his slimy lawyer time machine to steal Trump’s idea. Hell, even Reagan stole Trump’s “Make America Great” line! /True Believer
The most important issues right now , are immigration and trade . If the immigration issue isn’t dealt with in the way Trump is going to deal with it , nothing else will matter .
The second issue is the trade issue . This country cannot afford to surrender more jobs and sovereignty to the globalist cabal . If these issues aren’t fixed , we will become a third world hell hole .
Trump is the only, and I repeat, the only candidate addressing these important issues .
Trump will also be very good on the social issues like the Second Amendment and Abortion . He is a man of his word and will do what is right regarding these important social issues.
Go ahead and research what Cruz said about H1-B visas .. The Beck open-borders photo-op where Cruz went and welcomed more invaders was also quite telling .
So the answer is neither , but nice try , you open-borders shill
Trump is just another billionaire than considers you an idiot because you aren’t rich like he is and you are too stupid to make decisions for rich people like him.
Why do you think he talks to you like a 4th grader.
If Trump didn’t think you were stupid he would talk to you above the 4th grade level.
I’m not sure what you mean ... Trump is the only candidate that speaks for what’s left of the embattled middle and lower classes .. he’s not asking for money like all of the others .. he truly knows that the economy and borders have to be fixed , or nothing else will matter .
You sound like an open-borders globalist shill ... nice try cuck
No, actually it hit the mark ...
IIRC, the news organization that called Trump out on that was found to speak the their audience at a lower level than Trump. The Army writes its manuals at 8th grade or lower level so people can understand them. That doesn’t mean the Army thinks soldiers are stupid, does it?
