Another View -- Michael Reagan: Trump is no Reagan Republican
New Hampshire Union Leader ^ | January 26, 2016 | Michael Reagan

Mr. Trump, I knew Ronald Reagan. And you’re no Ronald Reagan!

Of course, I am stealing that line — with a twist.

Donald Trump shouldn’t mind. He’s been stealing my dad for his own purposes. Trump frequently invokes Ronald Reagan’s name to defend his sudden, 180-degree switch from being a life-long, pro-Clinton Democrat to a Reagan Republican.

Both men did make a switch, but almost all the similarities between the two end there. Ronald Reagan’s odyssey from Hollywood liberal to conservative backer took place over almost two decades.

Starting with his 1964 “Time for Choosing” speech that galvanized Americans for Barry Goldwater, dad began a 16-year effort of crisscrossing America to support conservative candidates for office. My dad also served eight years as California’s governor. When he ran for President, he had a proven conservative track record.

Donald Trump doesn’t have one. In fact, Trump still can’t explain his sudden change from being a liberal Democrat. When dad ran in 1980, Trump donated the maximum amount to Jimmy Carter. As the Wall Street Journal reported, Trump also donated to a PAC for Walter Mondale, who ran against dad in 1984.Trump has criticized some candidates for their indiscretions made during their childhood. But what can you say for a grown adult who supported both Carter and Mondale over Ronald Reagan?

... and Koch didn't want a Republican getting credit for doing something that had been a boondoggle for almost a decade.

I can assure you that party affiliation had nothing to do with that story. He wouldn't have let Jon Corzine or some other Democratic hack at Goldman Sachs do it, either. Koch didn't want Trump to build the skating rink for the same reason he despised the Guardian Angels -- because they were colossal embarrassments to New York City, and scathing reminders of just how ineffective the city government was at the time.

I don’t think anyone is deluded about who Trump is....

I have been enjoying the Trump phenomenon for how he’s been showing the mediots that they are NOT the gatekeepers, they are not necessary, and the enemy of the people.

Now, would he make a good president? I don’t know. Maybe.

By the time my state has a primary, my vote will matter little, so I am more sanguine about Trump or Cruz.

“...from being a life-long, pro-Clinton Democrat to a Reagan Republican.”

That is so demonstratively untrue that it can be considered a lie.”

That sounds very correct.

I GUESS MICHAEL REAGAN is Rino now, huh. I guess he's a fake conservative because he opposes Trump!?

The country may not need a Reagan now. I don't know if the times make the man or if the man makes the times or both. Reagan was the right man for his time. I don't know that he'd be the right man for different times. Our fight isn't with Communism today - thought it still exists.

Trump - I consider a moderate nationalist - may be the right man for these times.

My understanding is even Nancy has been fairly close to Michael Reagan over the years: certainly the President loved him dearly. I don’t think Ronald Prescott Reagan cares for him though.

Trump openly attacks conservatives and what they stand for on the campaign trail. Trump has not been a registered Republican since 1980 as you stated - that is completely false. He left the GOP in 1999 for being "crazy right" and briefly joined the Reform Party, then the Democrat party up until almost 2010. He strongly supported Nancy Pelosi and praised her and called for Bush's impeachment, supported Kerry over Bush, also praised Obama and his stimulus plan and has proposed "universal healthcare" that "the government's gonna pay for!". He's a strong defender of Planned Parenthood and claimed abortion is only a "small part" of what they do. He falls all over himself praising the Clintons. He's a strong supporter of the outrageous Kelo SCOTUS decision and supporter and participant in eminent domain abuse. Trump attacked Cruz, Rubio, and Paul for not supporting Obama's Syria policy.

Trump's "support for cops" includes his pledge to issue an executive order mandating the death penalty for cop killers - that of course completely undermines both the concepts of federalism and the separation of powers. He has advised he will continue to rule by executive order like Obama who he said "has lead the way" - he'll just do it "better" than Obama. And there's more where that came from.

No candidate is perfect, but all of that is collectively within one candidate. He is not a conservative - not even close. He's even, at best, wish washy on immigration, as you will see in those video clips linked above.

Trump is like Reagan. Or rather, he’s like the guy he believes Reagan to be. In his book in a chapter about con men he talks about Reagan a bit. He believed Reagan was such an effective performer that it took over seven years before people realized that he was an empty suit with nothing behind his smile.

That is what Trump is going for.

Trump has been a registered Republican since 1980, I guess all those pictures of Reagan shaking Trump’s hand means Trump is a Reagan Republican too.

Such a registered Republican in 1980, he donated the maximum amount to Jimmah Carter as well as Mondale's PAC--Nice registered Republican there. I guess we know what his handshakes mean.
