According to presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, there's one thing that more important to him than the country he's running to lead: his God.
In a remarkable exchange in New Hampshire, Politico reports, Cruz told reporters "I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth."
"I'll tell ya, there are a whole lot of people in this country that feel exactly the same way," he added.
Cruz, currently ranked second in GOP candidate polls according to RealClearPolitics, enjoys wide support among evangelical Christians in important, early-voting primary states like Iowa, where Cruz is locked in a tight race with current frontrunner Donald Trump. Cruz repeatedly accused Trump and his support of "more deal-making" and enjoying the support of unpopular "establishment" Republicans.
By proclaiming himself a Christian first and an American second, Cruz is professing higher loyalties than the United States â odd for a candidate who has repeatedly accused Muslims of doing much the same thing.

Ditto. Who would vary that priority order?
When any Christian thinks of himself as more important than Jesus, then they’re not really a Christian at all. Ted’s got this right!
The comment that launches a thousand Democrat ads.
I get what he is saying, but come on, Cruz...
I’m sorry, but Jimmy Carter also ran on the ‘Christian’ tag . . . he liked to tell us he was ‘born again’ . . . and repeated it in his Playboy interview.
And we know how that turned out.
A Christian is usually best known by his actions . . . not his words.
He knows Commandment I.
I love this quote!
Carson talked himself out of a chance to be a contender and Cruz is doing the same thing. Wouldn’t it be better to keep things like that to yourself!
Not odd at all if you don't try to deny that America and its Constitution are based on Christian values.
What do you know about dominionism? The Seven Mountains Mandate?
He’s telling us for a reason. He’s speaking directly to the majority of his followers.
It isn't much the same thing. Christianity is part and parcel of our civilization. Islam is not. I am with Cruz on this. It's my personal position too.
Another mistake.
He is sounding more like Huckster everyday just to win a state that is probably NOT going to vote for him in General
I started as Canadian then Christian then American next I will be Cuban
Good question.
I know that plays well in flyover country, and I have alot of respect if he in fact has those priorites. But he is running for a political office, not for salvation.
He was a Cuban before he was a Texan. Nitpicky on my part, I can’t help it sometime.
So you are privy to what was said in private?
Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, "This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner."
Luke 7:36-39
Shall I continue?
Meh.
I would probably say this statement myself, but then again I’m not running for President.
In most of my experiences with people who are as blatant about faith as Cruz is, they’re either trying to manipulate people or they’re suffering from massive spiritual pride.
I have a hard time saying WHY beyond that, but this statement just sounds phony to me and I don’t like it.
Hrrr.
Smartest guy in the room probably should’ve found a way to answer the question and shy away from a list.
