"Socrates, my master, is my friend but a greater friend is truth." - Plato
Free Market Economist Thomas Sowell recently joined other National Review contributors in criticizing Donald Trump and his candidacy for President of the United States. Stefan Molyneux responds to the writing of one of his intellectual heroes - and illustrates the flawed reasoning contained within Dr. Sowell's "Do Emotions Trump Facts?" article.
Hmmmm...Thomas Sowell is now an “establishment republican” and Donald Trump is a conservative.
Yeah. Right. And up is down and left is right.
Kind of scary when someone like that is now respected, and someone like Thomas Sowell trashed by so-called conservatives. My tag line is taking effect.
Could only take about 7 minutes of this shyster. He is terribly hard to watch what with all his eye squeezing and hand waving and wiggling around. On content, he purposefully misconstrues what Sowell said, applying the extreme to things said in generality, as in “Those of us who like to believe that human beings are rational can sometimes have a hard time trying to explain what is going on in politics.” He twisted that into Sowell acting arrogantly above everyone else. That’s just HIS manipulation to type Sowell in an effort to water down his points.
If it is common, it is common nonsense — proving Sowell’s first statement.
As for Trump doing nothing that was not self-serving. An honest reader knows that does not mean a total absolute but rather a generality. So the nutcase video dude can whine on and on about some example he feels was not self-serving. To many many people, Trump appears to do noting that is not self-serving. Even the ice rink is still serving the Trump brand and ambitions. In biblical terms, those who do something truly out of a charitable heart do not go about bragging about what they did to everyone. Matt 6:4 “so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” Giving that becomes your go-to self aggrandizement story certainly still has an element of being self-serving.
Sowell’s article was brilliant. The posted video is garbage, imo.
Context:
“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
- Matthew 6:1-6
I agree completely.
At five minutes, sneering and scornful tone is notable.
Rambling, stream of consciousness blather.
Term pseudo- intellectual comes to mind.
RE: Trump mocking handicapped - Claims Trump never saw the man he mocked. Yet Trump was reported to have made gestures that reflected his handicap.
“Sowell has undone his life’s work”
Garbage.
Click
Yes exactly.
I’m glad you brought up that handicapped thing. If a jury of Trump’s peers were to examine the evidence, I believe he would be found guilty. The evidence is there. Those who don’t think so are those motivated to overlook the evidence. Trump always says “I didn’t mean it like that” after his insults. In this case there is video proof. He made the gestures and they were not Trump’s normal gestures.
“He kids! He kids!” is the latest, one size fits all ofspinning response to any and all Trump sloppy verbosity.
Thomas Sowell engaged in multiple logical fallacy in his article and Stefan was just pointing them out
>> Sowell is dead on. His article should be read by all <<
Sorry, but we don’t read no stinkin’ articles. Get over it.
Seems everyone is sick to death of GOPe frat boy elites who push RINO’s as ‘the answer’ ...
Turns out the only people elites represent are themselves.
BTW, here is Sowell’s actual statement, which the video clown twisted into something else:
“Yet there are even a few people with strong conservative principles who have lined up with this man, whose history has demonstrated no principles at all, other than an ability to make self-serving deals, and who has shown what Thorstein Veblen once called “a versatility of convictions.”

He said NO PRINCIPLES other than an ability to make self serving deals. The video clown said it was something like “he does nothing that is not self-serving.” Something like that. I don’t wish to click on his blather again. If he wanted to claim Sowell made an absolute statement, it would be that Trump has no principles other than serving self. I think Trump’s flip-flopping record testifies to that.
Thanks very much for posting.

The sorriest thing is that this steaming pile was ever even mentioned on this board.
Thomas Sowell is my favorite political author from the 80’s. I learned a lot from him on race and free enterprise.
I don’t get why he’s shilling like this with the uniparty against Trump. It is totally out of character for him. I’m looking the other way until the waaabulance arrives and cleans up the mess.
Good post. : )
Wow, now we’ve turned against Thomas Sowell. Unbelievable.

Thomas Sowell has spoken critically of the Messiah Donald Trump (Blessed is His name) and, therefore, MUST be cast into the deepest darkness, shunned and our ears FOREVER must be closed to him.
