I love how we have to get so much of our news from overseas sources.
some of which are probably crew.
My sister was a stew for Delta. Got bounced off he ceiling while making sure the passengers were buckled up while going into sever turbulence. Banged up pretty bad.
Here you can see the strong jet stream and potential for turbulence.

Not surprised with that big storm along there.
I fly a lot and severe turbulence is pretty rare. That said I have experienced and it really really sucks.
The big planes like the 747 handle the small stuff with ease but when you get a doozy that monster gets rockin’.
How did you find the second diversion? Just curious.
Looks like initial cruising altitude was 29000. Then they went looking for smoother air at 27000 then 33000, hit the turb, then turned back and landed about 50 later
Always, when seated on a plane, wear the seat belt. It doesn’t have to be snug, but it would stop most people from getting their necks broken by smashing into the ceiling.
It wouldn’t stop food and drinks from splashing everywhere, nor will it stop your iPad from becoming a missile. But seat belts do help some.
48 posts and nobody has suggested that they must have had the fish?
I was on a plane once when it had some medium turbulence. FA slammed hard to the deck on her side near my seat. Just brutal. So anytime I see these stories I think of them first. They’re the ones that are never buckled in.
But I didn’t have the salmon mousse.
Already been all over the world many times. Don't need or want the hassle anymore.
Is that when you get hit by a Turban? This has gone too far.
Looks like a few possibly didn’t buckle up in time if there was time for a warning. It might have occurred too quickly for a warning. Flying people and food carts are never good.
Exactly what I’m thinking. The Amish... From Miami. To Milan for shopping......
Second.
The fact that severe turbulence strikes AA more than any other airline makes me think they are an irresponsible airline driven only by the desire to minimize operational costs. A year ago AA280 flew into a severe snow storm near Japan causing multiple inuries. The flight should never have taken off, been delayed or flown a different route, any of which would have cost the airline but the airline ignored that flew right into the storm.
Last I looked Delta flys more MD-80 a/c than Americam. I believe AA is in the process of retiring the MD-80s. I had a pic from ATL of a huge row of Delta MD-80s lines up at the gates, not one Airbus or Boeing aircraft visible in that area.
