Ted Cruz takes on Big Corn in Iowa

...

Cruz is one of just two candidates who doesn't support the RFS (the other is Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who similarly wants to lift other regulations that suppress ethanol use to offset eliminating the mandate) and he's taken plenty of fire for it from a group dedicated to promoting renewable fuels. But he's sticking to his guns, and on Wednesday tried to go on the offensive with his message.

"Just yesterday, Donald Trump promised not only to protect the ethanol mandate but to expand it to have the federal government do even more picking winners and losers by mandating ethanol be a larger part of the marketplace," Cruz said at a New Hampshire event where he was asked about his stance. "There's a reason why the lobbyists and Democrats want you focused on the ethanol mandate -- because it keeps Iowa dependent on Washington. It keeps you coming back every year and paying the lobbyists so that they get rich because it's Washington politicians setting the rules... I would get rid of all the mandates and have a level playing field."

No other candidate is principled enough or courageous enough to do that.

One of them even wants to INCREASE the subsidies to Big Corn.

Trump can say or do anything and it doesn’t matter.

His followers (or, more accurately, worshippers) do not care
what he says or does.

I am for Trump but he is wrong on this. I am sure there are those out there that can tell how subsidies help the farmers and it is a good deal. I just won’t buy it.

I thought Trump was supposed to be a tough guy, all independent of special interests.

But Trump caved into the Big Corn?

Weak, weak, weak.

I (Cruz) will get rid of all mandates....

I thought the complete explanation is Cruz will get rid of ethanol price supports and mandates by phasing them out in the future. And we all know what happens to things that will happen "in the future" in DC.

How about after the election, who ever is elected, sane, intelligent, knowledgeable people get together and figure out (1) new uses for corn and (2)other crops that the farmers could plant their fields in, that will be profitable without subsidies.

Trump supporters say that they want to get behind a guy who isn’t on the same old DC program. As seen in this case, Cruz has been openly opposing the DC SSDD agenda for so many years that many in both parties in Congress do not like him much... and yet Trump supporters list this as a reason to NOT like him!! I just don’t get it.

I think Ted made a mistake on this.
***************************************

Ahh...some of us think it good when a candidate doesn’t PANDER and, instead, sticks to his/her core constitutional conservative beliefs. Ted’s a rarity in politics—that’s why the corrupt RINOs & ‘RATS dislike him.

Donald Trump on the other hand has no problem with PANDERING with taxpayers’ money as he really doesn’t have core conservative beliefs.

Given the choices of Cruz phasing it out, or everyone else wanting more of it... I know which one I'd prefer.

(Paul may be for the immediate cut, I honestly do not know, but it would take much more than just that for me to jump onto that bandwagon.)

I call it “panicked voter syndrome”. They are all terrified, and are stampeding towards Trump regardless of his conservative bonifides because they view him as a strongman and savior. Little do they know, if he should win, he will go on lining the pockets of the corrupt politicians and fat cats...except this time he will do it with our tax money!

Can you clarify WHY you think it is a mistake? Or is the mistake that his name isn’t Trump?

You must have missed my reply #7. I think Trump is wrong on this. BUT this very well could give Trump Iowa and Cruz has spent a ton of time and money there. Cruz keeps burning bridges he needs. Sometimes one must keep silent and do the right thing. Nothing as far as these subsidies has changed yet. SO far we just the discussion.

While Cruz works for Houston billionaire Robert McNair who made his fortune in the oil and gas industry who want to squeeze out RFS because it eats into oil profits. It’s all about the money. Follow the money.

Allow me to “clarify”, In a very close race for the Iowa caucus unfriending the ethanol industry is likely to cost you the win. But you can always say you lost on principle. :-)
