First they heard the screams.
Karl Williams, the assistant coach for the Ooltewah High School basketball team, hurried downstairs to the rooms where the 14 teenage players were staying for the duration of their four day tournament in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
There he found a 15-year-old freshman player covered in blood, urine and feces, Hamilton County District Attorney General Neal Pinkston told ESPN. Two sophomore players were holding the boy down, while a third teammate, a senior, shoved a pool cue up his rectum. The freshman was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to repair his bladder and colon, which had been ruptured by the cue. The three alleged assailants were arrested and charged with aggravated rape.
But coaches never reported the Dec. 21 incident to local authorities or child services, according to investigators.
And meanwhile, the basketball team continued to play.

That must have been a very serious assault.
The team needed to be immediately removed and an investigation made as to what other assaults had been taking place.
Vlad (the Impaler, not Putin) knew what to do with people like the assailants.
:: charged with aggravated rape ::
And the English language dies ANOTHER death.
It ain’t “rape” in any form...
By the description, the charge ^should^ have been “aggravated assault and sodomy by device”.
Is this homosexual rape?
Wouldn’t the hospital protocols dictate that LE get involved once a person in this condition came in?
Though the coaches were negligent in not reporting the crime, the medical staff were also required by law to report a sexual assault. How could both layers of mandated reporters fail this young victim!?!? Pure evil.
My kids will never set foot in a public school. This is yet one more reason why.
Absolutely... Much less when the parents got the bill...
Sexual assaults (within the west) are not near as common as they were in earlier centuries. Not even if you throw in the nastiness during the second World War.
There is no need for the commonly used language to retain terms for differentiating all the different types of sexual assault. It doesn’t comepup that often outside of the courtroom.
In small towns high school sports run roughshod over logic and reason. The only thing that matters is that the teams have a good season and the jocks can do whatever they want as long as the team does well.
If this happened at a Catholic school by a Priest, the whole world would hear about this.
Weekly children are sexually abused in the public schools.
We need to HATE ALL schools, employees and teachers. We need a slimy attorney named Anderson to drag all schools into this mess. no sarc
The coach is finished....he won’t be able to work anywhere in the state after this. As for the hospital staff....I am puzzled how they avoided calling the cops. The hospital owner....whoever they are....have to be fairly worried about court proceedings. They will have to pay off the kid, and even the school district probably will have to find at least $200,000 to make the family happy.
As for sports? I’d pretty much end all sports at the school for a three-year period.
There is something wrong with story then, an angle is trying to be portrayed.
I wonder who the victim was?
Still, the use of such terms is a backhanded acquiescence to the Lavender Mafia.
The language is being muddied simply for political reasons.
I just googled about this incident, and did see at one site that the hospital staff DID call LE. I don’t think the WaPo article (or maybe any of them out there) has all of the facts.
It is certainly a sad, disgusting case. I hope the evil athletes involved get prison time, and it would be fair for the coaches to lose their jobs, and pay whatever settlements the school district ends up owing. There also may be some culpability in former athletes, etc., if there is a long-term culture of this type of abuse.
