We get it. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) is rattled. Heâs afraid of losing Iowa. He doesnât know how to deal with Donald Trump. But he sure isnât helping matters with embarrassing arguments. His latest: âRight now, the Washington establishment is abandoning [Sen.] Marco Rubio. They made the assessment that Marco canât win this race, and the Washington establishment is rushing over to support Donald Trump.â Thunk. Letâs consider the ways in which this is unhelpful.
First, after spending months genuflecting to Trump as a kindred spirit, how can Trump be a closet establishment figure? Maybe Cruz isnât a good judge of character. Maybe he was duped. In any event, it reminds us how cringe-worthy Cruzâs flattery of Trump was.
Second, no one cares. Voters are supposed to like Cruz more now because people he does not like (âthe establishmentâ) shift from one opponent to another? It defies logic.
Third, if the establishment is abandoning Rubio, maybe anti-establishment voters should like him more. Or something.
Fourth, it sounds desperate, in part because, no one thinks Trump is a Beltway insider. If anything, it makes Trump look powerful insofar as insiders have to come to him.

I wonder if Jim is aware?
Ted Cruz HAS no shortcomings, remember?
The Washington Post hates him.... gives me more reason to love him...
OMG!!! LOL!!!!
PS. I think you’re right!!!! LOL!
... a Ted Cruz nomination.
PRESIDENT Ted Cruz!
.
Cruz is an excellent debater, but he has been hemorrhaging since the last debate from self-inflicted cuts and rhetorical outbursts. I still expect to vote for him on March 1 if he is still in the race, but it looks bleak to me.
I keep saying, what else have these people got?
It’s either the freak train, or the fun one, the TRUMP TRAIN.
Yay! Another GOPe supporter for Trump.
I agree with the point that Cruz spent a lot of time saying how nice and great that Mr Trump is.
It does make one wonder how he can now be the epitome of the establishment to Cruz, but more than that — to me at least — it points out a mistake in Cruz’s strategy.
He waiting too long to attack.
He was busy looking like Trump’s long lost son, his friend from Texas, and Trump used that to pull so far ahead that Cruz couldn’t recover when he finally got around to it.
His first strike against Trump was saying that it’s okay for Trump to have victory taken from him at a brokered convention.
That was too little, and too late.
It’s hard now to say that the guy you used to call “Dutch Uncle Trump” is actually the “Zombie of Establishment Street”.
Maybe a zombie ate the Uncle’s brain on the way to an insurmountable lead. I’ll have to ask General Cruz.
Y'know, I thought this exact same thing while driving home from work this evening. The establishment is starting to realise that not only is Trump not going away, but he's probably also going to win it all - and they are scrambling to make nice and get in on the ground floor.
Now that's funny right there, I don't care who y'are.
I think the article raises some decent questions. That’s my take and I’m sure some would love to skewer me over a pig roast for saying it. Oh well...
I don’t always understand those section headlines and the justification or lack there-of for getting them myself.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh.
That’s right. Thank you. I’m slipping...
Looks like a badly used blow up doll. Yeah I went there.
It honestly made me forget my original comment. :-/
Jebbifer Rubin only does propaganda for The Cheap Labor Express. View everything she writes through that prism.
What does anyone here think????
This place has lost it's understanding of history.
Ted Cruz HAS no shortcomings, remember?

I heard Trump say Cruz is nasty.
I was just thinking the same thing, Cruz exudes no confidence, shows a sour little puss when finally having to play a little defense, and really that constant go-to stance of “look over there” doesn’t look all that good on him. Especially after weeks of honing up his Mr. IOWA persona, with the pastoral countenance, the difference is striking to see him go from one extreme to the other, while flogging those evangelical voters to death in Iowa.
Sweating in public plays poorly on anyone though.
The admins are exercising political and candidate bias before the primaries have even started.
Hell, it was even pulled from News-Current Events and Politics-Elections.
That does not reflect Jim's philosophies as I know them. He has in the past only banned articles in support of non-life issues, or articles in support of the candidate who lost in shame.
But I have not seen censorship outside those boundaries before the first vote was cast in the past.
