The S-400 is the most dangerous operationally deployed modern long-range SAM in the world. Its maximum effective range is up to 400km (215 nautical miles). The system reportedly can track 100 airborne targets and engage six of them simultaneously. The S-400 reportedly has the capability to counter low-observable aircraft and precision-guided munitions, and is also reportedly extremely mobile.

“Snag one off the battlefield in Syria and reverse engineer the system”

We don’t need it. We and the Russians have very different needs in the air, and that is why we evolved as we did. Although they have the reputation for aggression, in reality they have one giant need, to defend an enormous landmass against attack from the west. The landmass needs little foreign seaborne trade. Missiles and not much of a navy are big for them. The Russian military rarely leaves home, but they do sell a lot to nations that need defense and have a low skill set in the air combat business.
And this gets you to the fearsome S-400.

On the other hand, its difficult to count how many nations we have attacked and bombed in recent decades for reasons left to other debates. We are constantly moving and shifting and doing something different. We need world beating aircraft to establish superiority and perform dozens of tasks. We also need a huge navy. Our navy has fantastic missiles for ADA.
This gets us to the F-15, the F-22, the latest Navy Standard missile, and the carrier.

Basically, the Russians play home defense, and we play power projection. So we really have a very small need to create their air defense missile system.

“But can it survive a magnetic pulse?”

Knowing Russia, OF COURSE it will survive. It may degrade a bit in some areas, but then there won’t be much for it to shoot at either.

This article also assumes that these systems will work as intended. What’s the risk that we have not paid Ivan (or one of his many impoverished technical minions) what to him/her is a fortune to place code, a chip or some other element into components which will render those components inoperative should the US ever have a need for that?
