~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Support Activity Panama City, Florida

The United States Naval Support Activity Panama City (NSA PC), is located just outside Panama City, Florida and is a United States Navy military base. It is located within Bay County. Among other commands, it houses Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) and the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU).

The NSA Panama City was founded as the U.S. Navy Mine Countermeasures Station on 20 July 1945, as a result of the transfer of the test station from Solomons, Maryland, but was renamed in 1955 to the U.S. Navy Mine Defense Laboratory.

In 1972, it was renamed the Naval Coastal Systems Laboratory which changed to Naval Coastal Systems Center in 1981.

The base has been a subsidiary of several other commands in the past including Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, under which it was designated Naval Surface Warfare Center: Coastal Systems Station.

It obtained its current name in 2007 after changing from the prior command structure to the tenant command structure used by the Navy today in its command of research and development centers.

In addition to waterfront port facilities, the installation also contains a hangar and a paved heliport facility approximately 300 feet by 400 feet in size to accommodate naval helicopters up to and including the MH-53E Sea Dragon.

Howdy, Kathy! (((hugs)))

We sure did...or at least hubby did while I was at work. As far as I know she’s snug as a bug in a rug. :)

She was busy going through boxes, picking out stuff that she wanted to use and then we’ll store what she doesn’t want right now.

The place she is in was a locally famous hotel and was converted into appartments for retired and those needing assistance. They provide her meals [and I’ve heard that they are good!], clean for her and provide towels and sheets.

I’m almost persuaded to move in next door to her. LOL! Just Kidding...sort of! ;)

Aaaah, brings back more memories. Saw those guys a few times while in NC. Sure would be nice to have a time machine to take me back.

Take it easy driving home. Fingers crossed your sister felt up to cooking so you won’t have to.
See ya in a bit.

It sounds like a nice setup your MIL moved into. And being a former hotel rather than a new building, it won’t seem “institutional”. I hope she likes it there. That will give you and hubby peace of mind, knowing she’s happy and well-taken care of.

My father was stationed there several times in the 50s and 60s to receive or to impart training. My mother hated the place because in those days the area never seemed to have sunshine. My mother swore the natives would evacuate or go to bomb shelters if they ever saw the sun. We were never there for long at a time, 30 to 90 days.

LOL! And they said confusers were going to make life easier, as I recall.

This and the one before were better though I did like the first song. It rocked.

Welcome to the Canteen, ImNotLying...every Tuesday the Canteen takes a virtual Road Trip to a military base somewhere in America, always hoping a military person will recognize some place they've been stationed.

I'm going to poke around on the internet and see if I can find where the runways came from.

And thank you for your service to our country.

It sure will make us feel better now that she’s here close by. It was mighty hard to make a 7 1/2 hour trip when she would call to tell us that she was ill or had fallen and broken a leg...both of them last summer. Not at the same time, thank God!

She is a very VERY independent 94-years young and she just didn’t “feel rght” about staying with us too long. I know she’ll make lots of friends and they’ll all love her. She is a real treasure!

Did ya get that #50? if so...WOOHOO! LOL!
