Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. today announced plans to close 269 stores in the U.S. and globally...

As part of today's action, the company will close 154 locations in the U.S., including the company’s 102 smallest format stores, Walmart Express, which had been in pilot since 2011. Walmart instead will focus on strengthening Supercenters, optimizing Neighborhood Markets, growing the e-commerce business and expanding Pickup services for customers. Also covered in the closures are 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers, and four Sam's Clubs.

A lot were the express concept...which after viewing one such operation...I just came to note it was a mini-Piggly Wiggly with the Wal-Mart sign on the front. Nothing special. I don’t think they put a lot of thought into the idea or how to grow it.

“Sharpened focus on portfolio management”.

George Carlin was right...as time goes by, we can’t call it what it is. We add more words, more syllables to soften the blow.

The closings are only temporary.

They need to dig secret government tunnels underneath those stores and set them up as FEMA camps for the next Jade Helm exercise after Obama declares himself dictator.

What many people do not realize is that this is a major economic red flag. Get ready and fasten your seat belts. If Walmart is closing stores, other retail outlets won’t be far behind.

I have heard a rumor that many of the closing had to do with urban blight, specifically, when customer and employee theft eats into X percent of profit, the denizens of that particular jungle lose their Walmart.

I think I read early on the concept was intended to compete with the Dollar Stores that have sprung up in droves in small markets

The problem for Walmart is how to grow. The closings indicate that profitable growth via new stores is not necessarily a valid approach.

When I read the list, it seemed the stores were in small towns. One was Oriental NC another in Chapel Hill Tennessee. There are just not enough people to support the business

I believe you. I am following BDIY.

It has dropped like a stone. It’s now lower than at any point in its history. This happened just this week.

Yep looks like Walmart has determined they can’t complete in all size markets. Apparently they
do well with the large facilities but those designed for speciality customers don’t meet the
profit criteria.

Did they list the size of the stores they are closing as some are very small stores, not full blown Super stores. Even those have seen loss in business as they have become 30 and under niche stores where clothing is concerned. Groceries are higher in price than the local Kroger’s at least in my area in West TN. I’d have to drive 22 miles round trip to get to a Walmart. Not much there I’d want, when I can drive 2 miles to the nearest Kroger’s for groceries. As for clothes besides jeans and a few T shirts they don’t cater to my age range, nor shoe size. The big super stores hurt themselves when the discontinued Lay Away and closed the fabric department.

We have a nearby Navy base and a lot shop there as the Exchange only carries high priced merchandise on the Macy/Dillard price lines. And the city itself is not a large one. Doesn’t matter if I go to the Covington or Millington store they are about equal distance. And If I have to go, I’ll go toward Millington as I’d only make the trip on days I have to turn in Scripts or pick up meds from the Navy Base. Senior Ret. Military were DOD MANDATED to get their daily meds from the Base Dispensary in 2014 and it was made permanent in 2015.

So Walmart is becoming more selective in its appeal.

Good. They long ago chose to back diversity thugs and the homomafia over normal Americans (and their stores are full of China crap), so good riddance.
