Cruz’s Big Chance to Turn Tables on Trump (MSM is key)

Ted Cruz, now locked in a struggle to the political death with reigning campaign champion Donald Trump, faces a make-or-break night at the GOP debate Thursday night.

Proving his mettle as a candidate worthy of his post-season position, Cruz has ruggedly endured a sustained week of media battering over Trump’s birtherism blitz, losing little ground.

Trump’s all-out offensive raising questions about Cruz’s eligibility because of his birth in Canada – widely held to be a non-issue by constitutional experts — has arrested Cruz’s upward momentum but not caused a collapse. But while Cruz has barely dropped in the polls as a result, he cannot merely survive under siege from Trump if he means to win the nomination.

They hate Cruz more because he’s an intelligent, philosophical, movement conservative. Trump, they realize, is a demagogue without long term or sincere commitment to anything besides his own vanity. The Left can relate to him; he’s just as likely to return to his Democrat/crony roots as he is to pushback Liberalism in any way. With Cruz, they’re fighting what they call an “ideologue.” With Trump, they’re fighting a guy keen to prove he can make deals good for him with them. He could make a lot more money as president, and that’s likely a big motive for a man of avarice. With Trump, the government will get much, much bigger.

... More, Trump has publicly defended the confiscation of private property for eminent domain, even when the use for which the property is confiscated is purely private in nature:

Trump consistently defended the use of eminent domain.
Interviewed by John Stossel on ABC News, he said:
"Cities have the right to condemn for the good of the city.
Everybody coming into Atlantic City sees this terrible house instead of staring at beautiful fountains and beautiful other things that would be good."
Challenged by Stossel, he said
that eminent domain was necessary to build schools and roads.
But of course he just wanted to build a limousine parking lot.

Once again, this is Donald Trump's vision of private property rights when he was just another private citizen.
Imagine how much more damage he could do as the leader of the Federal executive branch.

Or ... Cruz could respond by signalling that he is continuing his campaign "in good faith" that he eligible for POTUS based on contemporary events and that his bonds to citizenship are equally strong, if not stronger, than Obama's. But that he will also pursue judicial review from the Supreme Court on the matter once seated as POTUS such that clarity to the term "natural born citizen" can be documented once and for all. Should he be found ineligible, then Chester Arthur will have been the first ineligible POTUS, Barack Obama the second, and he Ted Cruz would be the last.

A little intellectual honesty with the public is all it would take. This would appease the birthers. It would point the damaging spotlight on Obama to assuage democrat attacks. It would set the Supreme Court at ease knowing they have cover to continue ducking the issue for the next election cycle. It's easy and winnable all the way around. Cruz can be seated as POTUS if he plays his cards right.

Longer term thinking, however, I want Cruz at some point to "retire" to a Supreme Court appointment. It's going to be challenging to get him ratified if he doesn't get in front of this eight-ball now. He does not want to be remembered as the guy who lacks Constitutional understand of citizenship. He has to own his status and signal his intentions and keep it all 100% above board and Constitutional.
