Eight days ago, Donald Trump floated the idea that Ted Cruz might cause Republicans some legal headaches if he won the GOP presidential nomination because he was born in Canada -- albeit to a mother who was and is a U.S. citizen.
Today, Cruz's citizenship -- and the questions surrounding it -- is the single most dominant issue in the Republican race and has, without question, slowed Cruz's momentum in Iowa and nationally.
It's a perfect case study in both how Trump attacks and how he's able to so effectively sidetrack his opponents.

Why were slaves who were born on US soil in 1790 not considered Natural Born Citizens?
That was before #13 and #14.
Well, it serves their purposes to 'care' about Ted's NBC qualifications, where the reverse was true for Obama.
For the record, it's not just Ted's political rivals and enemies who care about this issue. There are a lot of patriotic Americans who feel just as strongly about preserving the original intent of the Framers - whether it's our guy, or one of the enemy's.
tl;dr
“For someone so familiar with the Constitution, it’s amazing that Ted thought he could get all the way to the White House without it ever becoming an issue.”
I agree. Cruz is normally very careful and cautious. But he took a chance on this one.
I was fourteen when I watched the Apollo moon landing.
I was telling my wife a while back, that even if Ted doesn't make it this time, he's got a long career ahead of him to try again (provided he's somehow found eligible). He's only 44.
Thank you for posting! Excellent work on your part. I appreciate it.
This controversy has been predicted ever since Cruz came to prominence. If you are just learning of it now, you haven't been paying attention.
Of course, that's irrelevant. Cruz rulez, birfers droolz!
I can only imagine that Ted really did take a calculated risk that the country would allow another person with questionable eligibility to assume the office of president.
Personally, I think the public still has a bad taste in their mouths over Obama's lack of qualification, and are not in the mood to let that slide again.
There's a great deal of wisdom in the Framers' choice to restrict the office the way they did, and Obama is living proof of it. The public is still stinging from the lesson.
Outstanding post. Thank you!
“There’s a great deal of wisdom in the Framers’ choice to restrict the office the way they did, and Obama is living proof of it. The public is still stinging from the lesson.”
You said it!
Bending what rule? NBC = citizen by birth. Cruz qualifies. End of story.
I understand that many people see it differently, and I respect that.
Many people are stupid. Obama was elected, not once, but twice. Obama is a NBC. But that is irrelevant. I repeat, many people are stupid! You owe the stupid no respect!
Obama is absolutely unqualified, but that fact has absolutely nothing to with his birth or the Constitution. And absolutely nothing to do with Ted Cruz, unless you are a tool of the Left.
There's a great deal of wisdom in the Framers' choice to restrict the office the way they did, and Obama is living proof of it. The public is still stinging from the lesson.
The steenking public had their chance in 2008. The Reverend Wright story should have torpedoed Obama. It didn't. And you think some cockamamie, false, obscure Constitutional argument should have? Get real!
My point was that, whether he was an NBC or not, and at the time I didn’t know enough about the issue to have an opinion either way, I still planned on voting for him, given the pass Obama was given. It took Obama many years into his Presidency to even bother to produce a birth certificate, and one that is of questionable authenticity, at that.
And, your statement that ‘Cruz qualifies’, is not the end of the story. The debate has barely started. Your opinion is just that.
Ted assumed average intelligence in the country.
Hopefully, he assumed right.
But present company, not to mention the Left and the MSM, is not encouraging.
Obama didn't produce it. The Hawaii Department of Health disgorged it to Obama's lawyer, who hand-carried it back to Washington, where it was scanned and posted on the internet. Which occasion caused much consternation when the posted PDF document proved to have multiple "layers". Being in the habit of scanning and shredding personal documents, this layer phenomenon was familiar and unsurprising to me. But the drooling birfers had a field day screaming counterfeit! Not realizing the HDoH still had the original!
So much for Obama's origin. He's a traitor, true. But a natural born traitor, having been born in Hawaii to parents not enjoying Diplomatic Immunity.
And, your statement that ‘Cruz qualifies’, is not the end of the story.
No, but it should be.
The Zero birfers have made their argument. It failed. Twice.
There is no reason to accord any respect to the arguments of the Cruz birfers!
You obviously weren't around here much during the period when the illegal Usurper was being installed as POTUS by the uni-party.
McConnell: No, Senate wonât pass resolution affirming Cruz’s eligibility like it did for McCain

Why can Mc-Conman do this? Because he has a revered creep — Professor Laurence Tribe, undermining Cruz [regarding natural born status].
Tribe is a creep, Mc-Conman is a creep, and they flock together.
The key to unraveling this is to completely obliterate Tribe’s aura of intellectual ‘superiority’.
If Cruz can’t do it, NO ONE can. He made a little stab at it here:
Ted Cruz: Are Democrats Behind Trump’s Citizenship Questions? [where he riducules Trump for quoting Tribe]

Cruz should challenge Tribe to a fair debate [no moderators, just a timer] and tear the guy open. Until he does that or something equally effective, this issue will fester.
I haven’t listened to Mark Levin much over the last 3-4 months, so I wasn’t familiar with what he had to say on the Cruz NBC issue except that I was aware from other Freepers, that he supported Cruz’s claim. I finally had a chance to listen to his argument, via the link you provided, and boy was it weak, even embarrassingly so. I expected a lot more from Levin.
As you say, he even admitted that he hasn’t researched the issue that much. His whole argument was basically a ‘common sense’ argument and amounted to little more than ‘come on, his mom was a citizen. It seems reasonable to me that that should qualify him”. No discussion of precedents or legal arguments. Nothing more then an off the cuff opinion that I could easily get from my barber. After hearing that, my opinion of Levin has gone down a few notches.
I suppose one could view that as "not settled" because the people don't have uniform belief; or it could be viewed as unsettled because SCOTUS has never ruled on citizenship in a presidential election contest case (but it has decided that other people born abroad of a citizen mother and alien father are naturalized); or it could be viewed as unsettled because there a few media figures (celebrity legal scholars) break from the herd and and contend that being born with only a statutory claim to citizenship means the candidate was naturalized.
But the way I see it, each voter will settle the issue, and that settles that. All one have to do is believe.
Is it settled that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon? Well guess what, some people say he didn't. In the year 1600, it was settled that the sun orbits the earth. Today, it it settled that there is such a thing as global warming, and it is caused by human activity. And just as surely, it is settled that Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen of the United States. Saying it is so, makes it so, period, end of discussion. The side with the bigger herd wins.
