After months of playing nice, Cruz hits Trump. Then hits him again. And again.

After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.

At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."

The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.

Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.

And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. “I think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,” Cruz told Carr.

Try open secrets.org.

I'm afraid you'll be disappointed though.

I will vote for either Cruz or Trump ...

However, that stated, and responding in the context of these remarks ...

Senator Cruz bashing “New York values” is a rather disingenuous position to take when he is a Houston big wheel (Houston is not exactly known for holding staunch conservative values), a well-connected Washington player having super PAC backing, and married to a woman high up on the Goldman Sachs ladder (read revolving door Washington cronyism).

The fact is that Donald Trump will pull in Democrats, Moderates, and Independents - Cruz has very little chance of doing the same - and particularly b/c his holy roller, wear-religion-on-sleeve antics are off-putting to many.

Tie those particulars in with the “perception” that he favors increases in H1B visas (whether this is so or not) and it is easy to see that he will face real problems in the general election.

Trump is the laziest candidate I have ever seen.

Whatever he's doing, it's working. He gets the crowds.

IMO, Cruz would be another Bush II. Speaks well, doesn't move the ball forward one bit, sells out globalist agendas and calls it conservative.

Interesting. I don't trust him either, and I don't know why. He says all the right things, too.

“his holy roller, wear-religion-on-sleeve antics are off-putting to many”

Especially those gay New York contributors.....

.... which is to say that Cruz is wise enough to be his own man 100% of the time, and show that fraction of his true self that is necessary for the current audience.

The Current Audience is Republican voters, most of whom are conservative and most of whom hate the Establishment.

That’s working for him now.

When it is necessary in the General to be more general, I’m sure he can. The man is not a chameleon, he is a wise, true, reasonable, decent conservative.

None of this politicking means Cruz won’t actually be conservative. He will. But he will also make his arguments for those positions in the most reasonable way to the audience he is in front of. That’s smart and calculated, but also true and honorable enough for a politician.

Trump is an intellectual lightweight compared to Cruz.

Am I going to vote for a Celebrity or a Constitutionalist?

But Trump DOMINATES in the media battle, which is sadly crucial. I’m a Cruzer, but Intellect is not what the majority vote for in America anymore. Cruz is the perfect candidate for 1948... modern America has a different focus.

By the way, this is WaPo trying to make a bigger fracas between the front runners than there actually is. I hope we, and the candidates, are smart enough to not play into it. In the best scenario, they work together against the GOPe, and the media, and the Dems. Lord please make it so.

Senator Cruz may speak about some other individual’s knowledge of the “nuclear triad” all he is of wont to do, BUT ...

Does a born-again holy roller possess the balls to actually resort to the USE of nuclear weapons? This is the weakness I perceive in Senator Cruz. I believe tat his “religious values” trump his CIC values. I’ve yet to ever meet an OTT Christian zealot who would actually have the balls to go total war on an enemy. They are so often predisposition to turn the other cheek, or else offer a timid response to an enemy attack.

Ever notice that every single election, people come up with not only new and exciting reasons to not vote for the most conservative guy available, but move evermore leftward to do it?

Fhen FR began it was conservative posters standing on principle as far as the eye could see.

Now it’s ongoing rationalization.

Honest truth is that one of the most decent guys I know was born in NYC and lived there until his 30s. Ornery as hell but good hearted and actually quite brilliant.

You are correct. I have been conflicted about all these so called natural born vs naturalized citizen until I read this article today.Hoosiermama posted a link in an earlier thread titled “The End of The American Presidency” by JB Williams dated 3/29/2015. IT sure opened my eyes. It’s well worth the read. Ted Cruz isn’t who we think he is. I supported him with donations and prayer. Not anymore.

Trump has close to 100% name recognition and the general electorate still don't like the sucker. He has zero upside.

And the more he opens his piehole, the more people he alienates (no pun intended) and/or they see through him.

Trump will sweep most of the States and win the Primaries hands down. Your guy Cruz hasn’t got a chance.

"Boy, I'm not even running, and I have no real idea, but without googling, I'm would guess that means the three common modes of nuclear weapons delivery: land-based ICBMs, submarine-based ICBMs, and bomber-delivered warheads. (I just googled it and I was correct, Trump couldn't guess that?)

He guessed...he just guessed wrong.

You know who really knew about the nuclear triad? In fact, this guy was so knowledgeable, he could tell you the details of how a submarine nuclear power plant worked. He didn't do so well as President.
