It's a cliche to say that democratic states can't function properly without an informed electorate. But itâs absolutely true. And this is why, heading into the 2016 election year, I'm nervous about the future. With Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential contenders, even many Republican die-hards are shaking in their boots.
But Trump isn't the cause, just the symptom. The deeper cause is a strain of anti-intellectualism that runs through the roots of American culture. And while this strain is found on both sides of the political spectrum (see some liberals on vaccines and chemtrails), it's mostly concentrated among religious conservatives on the political right. For those who espouse anti-intellectualism, conspiracy theories have the same clout as legitimate science, the opinions of non-experts are just as credible as those of the experts, and ideology takes precedence over the cold hard facts.
As I once told a co-worker (who thought I was some sort of genius on points of general knowledge such as this...)
They DO teach this stuff in school, if you stay awake for it.
No surprise there. He is a low info guy as well as well if one actually listens. Most hear the first way he frames something and not how he walks it back. Latest example he didn’t know Cruz couldn’t just go to a court to get himself approved, as if.
Cruz said we don’t live in a police state. Didn’t Trump say he would hunt them down and deport? Then soften it later with he would let the good ones back?
As always, anyone who trashes Scalia like he did is not close to being on the right.
A SALON article?.. To take the time to read it is akin to trying to relate to Hitler’s ideologies.
Gay hipster alert.
You’ve also answered the question “Why is Trump drawing support from as much as 20% of Democrats?”
Can’t do that with the Charles Krauthammer approach.
Pajamaboy has all that education but is still dumb enough to be a liberal.
Trump must speak to the Dems/ welfare party. Somehow he must get through to the Africans and others that don’t graduate HS. The hope is, that a few will defect to the other side.
In my late father’s generation, the 4th grade was their alma mater. He finished 8th grade. And went on to own several farms and a was a partner in a Livestock Auction Barn.
Most of these mental wimps nowadays, like that writer, are educated beyond their intelligence.
When I was much younger and on the speaking circuit...someone told me to speak at the 5th grade level and to write the way you speak.
I have a hard time reading some books when every page and, Chapter says much the same thing as all the previous pages. FILLER?.......I don't know, but some i.e.250 page books could be condensed to Readers Digest volume.
These morons still haven’t gotten the e-mail, Trump’s supporters Hate Fox News.
Democrats and other submissive homosexuals have really found a home at Salon.
“Gay hipster alert.”
Don’t be so hard on the poor guy.
I’m sure he’s a hit with the ladies.
Dating him, they double their wardrobe.
Not that long ago, marketers were able to sell millions of Americans a small box with a "pet rock" inside.
It was very popular.
Fourth-grade level? Cool. We're getting better!
“He’s both swave and deboner, and he wears his sister’s glasses!”
I doubt that’s all that he wears of his sister’s.
Yeah, the freaks and perverts at Salon are so adult.
And then you will stubbornly refuse to be accountable when the leftist Trump you voted for moves forward with more-and-bigger government solutions to every problem, and the liberals cheer.
Holy cow.
Democrats all talk like robots - trying to keep up with their teleprompters and also trying to adjust their tone and dialect depending on the particular crowd at the moment.
Media? - not a word...
