Donald Trump asks a Reno audience to weigh in on Ted Cruz’s eligibility

RENO, Nev. -- After days of coyly raising questions about Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, given that he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Donald Trump let his audience weigh in at a rally Sunday afternoon.

"Is he a natural-born citizen?" the Republican White House hopeful asked several thousand gathered in a Reno ballroom. Members of the crowd shouted back, "No!"

"I don't know," Trump said. "Honestly, we don't know. Who the hell knows." Cruz was Trump's No. 1 target during the 65-minute event, revealing just how much of a threat the Republican senator from Texas has become to the front-runner. Before the rally started, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." blared, a new edition to Trump's playlist.

"So, Cruz is a problem," Trump said, beginning an attack that lasted about seven minutes. "And here's the problem: It's called uncertainly. It's called you just don't know."

Cruz has repeatedly said there is no question that he is eligible for the presidency, saying this weekend that "the Constitution and federal law are clear that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural-born citizen." Cruz's campaign has yet to respond to Trump's latest comments.

But Trump said Sunday that "this is not a settled matter" and that he's not the only one raising questions. He said if Cruz becomes the Republican nominee, the Democrats could challenge his eligibility in lawsuits that could drag on for years.

"Does anyone know more about litigation than Trump?" Trump said of himself. "Okay? I know a lot. I'm like a PhD in litigation."

Trump compared Cruz running for president with this lingering question about Democrat Hillary Clinton running despite lingering questions about her use of a private email account during her time as secretary of state. Later Trump also compared the situation to a fighter being disqualified for not meeting the weight class.

You are in good company with looney tunes Alan Grayson and liberal hack lawyer Lawrence Tribe.

Finally, a word of sanity in the madly sick crowd. I agree, Cruz is not eligible and anyone who continues snarking insults has obviously never read the Constitution. They are exhibiting exactly the reason this country is in such dire straits.

I think you meant ‘irrelevant’, South40.

“As I understand it, if Cruz’s mother had been in Canada 5 or more years before he was born, he would not have been eligible.
However, as her certificate of American birth has now been produced, and she gave birth to him inside of 4 years in Canada, the issue of his American citizenship appears to have been established.”

Sounds quite familiar . . Cruz and Obama have similar backgrounds, it seems.

As I understand it, if Cruz’s mother had been in Canada 5 or more years before he was born, he would not have been eligible.

Wrong. The five year reference is how long one must have resided in Canada before one could apply for Canadian citizenship.

It was wrongly asserted by pinheads that Cruz's mother was a Canadian citizen when he was born. They were proven wrong by the fact that the family was only in Canada for three years prior to his birth and one had to be there for five years before applying for Canadian citizenship.

Baloney! Trump better not say this, he better not say that, Trump you’d better lay off, etc. etc. etc. I can’t believe you people advocating at the top of your lungs for being quiet and gentle and play nice little puppy! It is disgusting. This country needs a STRONG LEADER and you
Cruz supporters want to play kindergarten games. No wonder this country is up the creek without a paddle!

There’s nothing to discuss. For every person saying something negative about Trump, there is someone saying something in the same range as Cruz.

Pick a Cruz thread and I almost guarantee that before 10 posts elapse a Trump supporter will be there condemning whatever Cruz did or did not do. So retaliation, right or wrong isn’t surprising.

We wnet through this with Palin. And when the PDSers got the crap they had been dishing out, they went on a projection binge too. Lest we forget, the very same people now praising DT as the greatest of Americans were calling him an idiot and a clown not one year ago. So it’s also not shocking that his supporters get called out on their flip flopping.

Aren't you happy auto correct handed you that opportunity to avoind addressing the issue I raised which is your hypocrisy?

Of course you are.

My comments about Trump's ugly mug are no more childish than was your hero's comments about Fiorina. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to point that out.

Actually, that would be Trump and Obama as they are both liberals.

This is why I don’t trust Trump fully. Can he be this stupid?
.....................................................

This is why I DO TRUST TRUMP. He tells it like it is! He doesn’t play little marshmallow games. He’ll straighten out some very serious problems and not play games about it like the current administration does. You Cruz people say you want change but all you want is play nicey nicey more of the same.

Well, I’m voting for Trump anyway, so the point may be moot.

It will be sad if Trump gets elected, and then removes his halloween costume he's been wearing for the past two years. That of becoming a Republican and leaving Obama's camp".. only to discover he is truly one of them.. and you voted him in!!!

Your pain will be great... but it will be too late.. It will be over for America.

Cruz doesn’t have what it takes. He is a sneaky slimy sellout and his votes prove it. For someone to claim to be a conservative and join in on the sellout of America’s Sovereignty is beyond the pale. You can have him, hook, line, and sinker. I’ll lock and load with Trump.

Trump is a brilliant money maker. Swear to the heavens above that you have never looked at a girly magazine if you’re a man and I’ll call you a liar.

Sorry, but I’ve lost faith in politicians in general. By their complicity with the soebarkah beast they have brought us to our current state. I no longer see any sense in automatically rewarding that. I don’t see how it can be any worse with Trump...and I’m hoping it just may actually be better.

I don’t believe he’s wearing a costume.

I meant to add that I think Cruz has a problem, and if that's true, then the Republicans, especially the conservatives, and the GOPe have a Cruz problem.

And, if all that is true, by drawing attention to this possibility, as he is at this time, it's easy to see Trump as purposefully coming to the timely rescue of a lot of people, including young Mr. Cruz, before real damage is done.

Setting his persona aside for a second, Trump seems to have a better view of things than pretty much everyone else, so I think I'll just mentally place my bets and wait and see what happens next.

The last time I got schooled, "Always choose Black" was an eye and heart opening truth I learned the hard way. I think I'll do better the next time I play, but then, that would be cheating.

Trump is actually doing Cruz a great service. By bring this up now he is getting it over with so if Ted becomes the nominee the Dems won’t be able to use it come October.

And how do you know I’m a Cruz supporter?

The reason I said that is I want Trump to be the best he can be and not screw up any of his chances of winning. We must win and not take any chances.

Trump can be a strong leader without dipping down where the others are and making mistakes.

Please answer my question.
