In Iowa, Trump intensifies ‘birther’ attack against Cruz
ABC ^ | 1/9/16 | Staff

Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Ted Cruz at two Iowa campaign rallies on Saturday, urging voters to reject the Texas senator by saying his Canadian birth raises serious questions about his eligibility to become president.

"He was born in Canada. I guess his parents voted in Canada," Trump said at an afternoon rally in Clear Lake. "So if you were born in Canada, immediately it's a little bit of a problem."

Trump added: "You cannot put somebody there that's gonna go in ... he's going to be immediately sued."

Earlier Saturday, Trump said at a rally in Ottumwa that Cruz "has to straighten out his problems," a veiled reference to the so-called "birther" issue. But he declined to elaborate further, saying, "We'll discuss that later."

Cruz, however, is a naturally-born U.S. citizen, and most legal experts agree that he is qualified to be commander-in-chief.

But recently, he has had to aggressively push back on questions pushed from Trump about his eligibility for the presidency. He renounced his dual Canadian citizenship in 2014, and on Friday, Cruz's campaign shared with the conservative website Breitbart a copy of his mother's birth certificate showing her born in the United States.

Policy chops is not going to win this election. I’ve been reading the Master Persuader Series at Scott Adams blog. http://blog.dilbert.com

“If you have been following the Master Persuader series in this blog, you know that the influence stack goes like this:

Identity beats analogy
Analogy beats reason
Reason beats nothing

Most of the candidates are trying to make an appeal to reason, and failing, because reason beats nothing. Rand Paul has lots of reasons. Some might be darned good. No one cares.

Trump says he wants to “make America great again” which is a pure identity play. Voters enjoy - at a visceral level - the idea of having a national identity that makes them proud. According to the Master Persuader stack, Trump is a full layer of influence above the others. And it shows.

Trump is not worried about anyone suing about his citizenship—it is a matter of settled AMERICAN law that his mother was an American citizen at the time of his birth, and his father, being born on American soil , was an American citizen as well..

Cruz—not so much, according to Laurence Tribe.

So, it is a matter that needs to be cleared up.

Well then, Cruz has a claim of British nationality on him, a

Nope. You'd better check British nationality laws. Being born in Canada to American parents does not concerned British nationality to anyone.

Trump cleaning it up for Cruz. Trump is a brilliant man. Some to this day,see only what they want to see. Cruz needs to step it up or he'll just lose. The blame is on Cruz about this. The media is loving it. Cruz will get nowhere or will his supporters blaming it on Trump. The media and dems will tear him up.

You just smoked your own argument about Trump’s mother.

Thanks for playing.

I am not impressed with Tribe after his comparison of Cruz intelligence with that of Obama saying Obama was “ as brilliant or more so”. BS. But listening to the video twice I do not hear him say he agrees that Cruz is a NBC. Where in video do you find that?

Crazy, eh? Well, if being an expert on constitutional matters makes him crazy, then so be it.

It would be very interesting if you were to listen to his show from Friday and tell me exactly which part of his recitation of the laws concerning “natural born” you can find fault with. I’m serious. I like Cruz a lot and I was pretty upset when this citizenship controversy came up, but for me it has all been laid to rest.

I’m not trying to stir up trouble here, I just think the points he makes are rock solid. But then, I’m an engineer, not a lawyer, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Trump is not worried? Well I am worried. To paraphrase Trump, “ someone may sue him”.
Trump needs to clear this up.
Chuckle!

This is curious.

Nobody is going to stop voting for Cruz because of what Donald says.

So why do it?

Well then, Cruz has a claim of British nationality on him, as he did not renounce his Canadian citizenship to the British Home Secretary.

Your reasoning escapes me. Are you saying that anyone renouncing Canadian citizenship has to do so via the British Home Secretary and not the Canadian national authorities? That's balderdash. Really off the wall crap, An adult ought to have developed better thinking processes.

Besides, American law recognizes Trump's mother as an American citizen and that is all that matters lee-gul-ly.

Exactly, as I have been arguing repeatedly. And exactly the same argument holds true for Ted Cruz. American law recognizes Ted Cruz as an American citizen by birth, and THAT is all that matters lee-gul-ly.

That makes him a naturalized citizen, not a natural born citizen.

Wrong. If that were true then why didn't Cruz have to go through the naturalization process?

Cruz’s father renounced his Cuban citizenship and became a Canadian Citizen and they lived there 8 years from what I understand. Then they up and move to the states and Cruz’s father becomes an American citizen. Um uh huh.....and we’re talking about loyalty????????????

According to American settled law, there is no question about Trump’s NBC status.

Born on American soil to two American parents—there is no better legal pedigree for NBC.

At best, Cruz can claim one American parent, but was born with a minimum of dual citizenship(some will say three, as his father was a Cuban national). And Cruz was born on Canadian soil.

So it is easy to see why there would be a question.

I don’t necessarily agree that Ted is not NBC, only that there is a question that should be legally clarified.

And if it is not addressed now, the Dems will make sure it is addressed later.

In fact they are almost identical. So a ruling on CRUZ is also a ruling on Obama.

Sounds like a plan to me!

Yeh at this point I think we can pretty much figure Cruz is off the ticket.

I too find Cruz’s claim that “it’s settled law” quite troubling. I can tolerate and expect a little pushing of the truth but outright lying is dishonest. This issue needs to be put to bed or Cruz will not be viable for Trump to pick him as VP.
