Instances of volcanic eruptions are their highest for 300 years and scientists fear a major one that could kill millions and devastate the planet is a real possibility.
Experts at the European Science Foundation said volcanoes - especially super-volcanoes like the one at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, which has a caldera measuring 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km) - pose more threat to Earth and the survival of humans than asteroids, earthquakes, nuclear war and global warming.
There are few real contingency plans in place to deal with the ticking time bomb, which they conclude is likely to go off within the next 80 years.
The world's most dangerous active volcanoes include Yellowstone, Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, and Popocatepetl i near Mexico City.
If any of them or other massive volcanic peaks suffered a major eruption the team said millions of people would die and earth's atmosphere would be poisoned with ash and other toxins "beyond the imagination of anything man's activity and global warming could do over 1,000 years.
The chance of such as eruption happening at one of the major volcanoes within 80 years is put at five to ten per cent by the experts.

The US would be gone, but not instantly.
There’d be plenty of time for the Progressives on the coasts to black-slap, gloat and hold celebratory parties over the mass demise of all the Bitter Clingers in flyover country. Before they hit upon the realization of where their food came from.
An asteroid strike is a real possibility. Another ice age is a real possibility. Failure of the sun - supernova or brown dwarf - is a real possibility.
What "scientists fear" has nothing to do with any of it.
People who live in the beautiful state of California have this primordial fear of sudden catastrophic earthquakes and apocalyptic volcanoes. Hollywood, ever sensitive to its market, churns out disaster movies due to such phenomena, on a regular basis. Forget reforming the drugs, decadence, violence, crime, terrorism and individual dissipation that is rotting the culture from within. People are awaiting a sudden biblical like severe punishment for their behavior. Why reform when its all going to blow up anyway? So it goes.
But everyone in OKla. thinks it’s because of FRACKING!
On the bright side an eruption would do wonders in the fight against global warming which the alarmists claim will wipe out humanity. Think positively.
So Global Warming doesn’t matter
Amen. Nothing I can do about it so why worry?

The Volcano That Shrouded the Earth and Gave Birth to a Monster
Three years of darkness and cold spawned crime, poverty, and a literary masterpiece.

He WAS in my mind after reading my post.
Of course not, he’s dead!
I did attend college in Oregon when Mt. St. Helens went off.
What bothers me the most about Yellowstone is that it is:
1) A UN World Heritage site
2) It’s water-right is #1
3) My water-right is 10,000ish -
I can guarantee that water-rights above, say 1,000, will be shut down long before there is an explosion of the caldera.
FYI, it’s difficult to drive to the southern portion of my county, Gallatin, without travelling through YNP.
Since when is a “5-10% chance” “likely”?
Based on the timing of the last three Yellowstone eruptions, if it erupts next year it won’t be early, if it doesn’t erupt for another 10000 years, it won’t be late.
So much for that survival retreat outside of Cody.
Vesuvius Is on the edge of a huge caldera much of which is in the bay of Naples ( Campi Flegrei ) If the Naples Caldera goes off, not just the Vesuvius cone volcano, it could rival a big Yellowstone eruption.
Minorities and women hardest hit!
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck
Sayin’ “Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya”
At seven PM a main hatchway caved in
He said, “Fellas, it’s been good to know ya”
Really? That far?
Simulation of Yellowstone eruption shows extended reach of massive volcanoes
LOL
Exactly...
