State of Jefferson supporters plan bill seeking independence from California
The Sacramento Bee ^ | January 6th, 2016 | By Alexei Koseff

Now tallying 21 counties among their ranks, supporters of the movement to carve an independent “State of Jefferson” out of Northern California plan to introduce a bill this session seeking sovereignty.

Organizers on Wednesday turned in declarations for 15 counties, including Sutter, Placer, Nevada and El Dorado, asking the state to grant them permission to separate. Six others petitions – which were either passed by the county boards of supervisors or reflect signature-gathering drives – have already been filed.

Jefferson proponents contend that their rural areas lack adequate representation in state government, which has led to over-regulation and environmental policies that decimated their regional economies, particularly the logging and mining industries that historically supported them. Their seal bears an XX, signifying that they have been double-crossed by state government.

At a rally on the steps of the Capitol to celebrate the “declaration day,” Mark Baird, a retired pilot from Siskiyou County who has led the Jefferson movement, called it “systematic persecution” and promised to “start a straight-up fight with the people in that building” to win their independence.

“We live in a state led by liars,” he said. “They have no empathy for what it takes to live our lives.”

I grew up in California. They’ve been trying to split the state since I was in grade school.

It will be interesting to see where this will go.

"For some reason all I am seeing is 2 more liberal senators."

Not from Jefferson. No way, no how.

“For some reason all I am seeing is 2 more liberal senators.”

Well, as you Texans would say: “Now bless his little heart, he don’t know from where he’s speakin!” California (actually not unllike Texas as it turns out) area-wise is mostly conservative. Before the SCOTUS rulled on “one man, one vote” and we had a true bicameral legislature where the CA Senate, was not based on population, we had a reasonable check and balance and the rural counties didn’t get steamrollered by LA and SF. But since that “determination,” LA and SF have basically had their way with the state (Like you will soon with Houston, DFW and San Antonio). The new state of Jefferson would definitely be Conservative, so we would have two more Conservative Senators and the CA House delegation would be reduced in its number and the new members from Jefferson would also be Conservative. BTW you can also get a CCW permit for the asking if you live in more than half of California’s counties.

I still say I’d rather fight for the state and turn it back Republican.

There are many factors that prevent it, not the least of which is the RNC GOPe that won’t lift a finger for Conservatism in the state.

If we could secede from them, that would fix a lot.

Those particular CA counties for the most part are quite libertarian/conservative.

From experience, because of all the Californian invading Texas, I can say there is a pronounced difference between a California conservative and a Texas conservative.

Good to know the name is in honor of a president and not a TV series.

The problem is if we deviate from 50, here comes D.C. to give them two Rat Senators forever.

I was looking at the congressional map of Texas the other day. With the exception of the large RAT-run cities, your RATS are all along the Rio Grande, but it looks to me that the line is moving northward, so you will ultimately face the same situation with which we are faced here. California's Central Valley (excepting the weather) is very much like rural Texas. I know because I almost took a job in Graham, TX so I've seen both places. And I would suggest that the people who populate those areas are conservative. That's the area that wants to secede. I guess my point is that you in Texas had better take a look around, because what's already happened here in CA will be Texas before very many more years. I think some Texans are refusing to see what's happening, and people are moving to Texas because they think it hasn't/won't happen there. Time will tell, but I'm not betting on your survival.
