Sen. Rand Paul joined Donald Trump on Wednesday in questioning whether Sen. Ted Cruz is eligible to be president.
"You know, I think without question he is qualified and would make the cut to be prime minister of Canada, absolutely without question, he is qualified and he meets the qualifications," Cruz told Fox News Wednesday.
Cruz was born in Canada, and Trump has been talking about whether Cruz qualifies as a natural born U.S. citizen under the Constitution for the last few days. Trump went so far on Wednesday as to say Cruz should get a court decision to settle the question.
Paul said it would be ironic if Cruz came under no scrutiny on the question his eligibility after President Obama faced similar questions based on much less evidence.
"It is interesting, and I think sometimes people point out that it's a double standard, in the sense that people went out, hot and heavy, including Donald Trump, about President Obama when there was really nothing more than conjecture that he wasn't born in the country," Paul said. "And yet, there hasn't been really the same outrage at all for some one who actually is born in another country."
This issue is controversial, and has never been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court. A consensus of legal scholarship seems to favor Cruz's case that he is eligible, but it is technically still an open question, which Paul mentioned.
"I don't think we've ever gone through the court system for the Supreme Court to decide one way or another," Paul said.

Paul is dead on!!
Rand, like The Rube needs to go back to the Senate and beat up on Dingy’s butt boy Ditch daily.
Rand Paul and the other also-rans sure are useful when you need them. Yay Paul! Now Rick Santorum should chirp up next. The campaign is so fun!
“I think without question he is qualified and would make the cut to be prime minister of Canada”
That’s gonna leave a mark!
More birther nonsense.
Just one more loser presidential candidate (Huckabee, Bush, etc) trying to remain relevant.
Well, I guess we know who the current frontrunner is.

Is it me or did the writer meant to say...”Paul told Fox News Wednesday.”???
Cruz is probably calling Glenn Beck now to get on his safe haven sanctuary show.
I actually believe Paul may very well be Trump’s VP pick. I know it seems illogical at face value because they’ve had some issues in the debates, but Libertarians are favorites of the younger crowd and Rand has actually been complimentary of Trump in some of his positions. Rand plays the part of Cruz as a VP pick (Senator, knowledge of the government, quasi outsider but yet an appeal to the younger crowd and those socially conservative but more socially moderate). I never thought Ted brought much to a Trump ticket except ambition. Rand may well be content to play second fiddle and wait his turn.
Good news. For others to be piling on Cruz means he is doing very well.
Great points!
I’m also thinking Huckabee and/or Santorum may be trying for Trump’s VP pick too.
Funny how Trump tends to side with the GOPe more and more each day!
“Why? Because this could get to a constitutional crisis as it adresses OBAMA also. And that is the way Ted should respond. “If the question is my being eligible, then lets talk about Obama.”

Yes! History will prove that Obama was NOT eligible to be President! Look at how much damage to this Nation Obama has done.
Cruz is eligible by current US law.
At the same time, the ‘natural born citizen’ issue has never been heard by the Supreme Court.
Is it possible that some state or candidate could get them to take it up? With 4 democrats and a question mark about what an originalist would say, and unknown conclusions that would be reached by GOP-E justices, a challenge would not be a good thing to have happen.
I clearly can see Bush challenging this in court...out of spite if nothing else. Not Rubio, because he has the same vulnerability only in a different direction. He was born here, but his parents weren’t US citizens, so in his case the ‘natural born citizen’ issue would also be a relevant discussion for the Scotus to decide.
I think a state or a candidate would have standing to challenge, but I’m no lawyer.
This could have just as easily been Rubio or Jindal, but it really needs to be clarified. I am damn sick & tired of the democrats getting away with murder, then using the very thing they just got away with to confound republicans.
Get it done, airtight.
I appreciate your thought. Let me assure you that bush is finished. The ELIGIBILITY ISSUE WILL BE BROUGHT BY THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, who ever he is.
