If you must drive, get on with it.
Don't just sit there and let your car warm up â it is a machine that is designed to move after all â and all you're doing is adding to the state's notorious wintertime pollution problems.
Results from a 14-month collaborative study show that 75 percent of a vehicle's combined emissions occur within the first three minutes after it has sat for 12 hours for more.
It's called a "cold start," and if drivers want to help clean up Utah's dirty air, they should avoid it if possible.
"Cold starts are a big issue for air quality. That is one of the reasons we say, 'If you don't have to start the car that day, avoid it and use another alternative,'" said Joe Thomas, director of Weber State University's National Center for Automotive Science & Technology.
Thomas knows that leaving the car turned off is not always an option, so if you must do a cold start, he and other researchers say to refrain from letting the car sit and idle.
"We found there is no need to warm up your car," Thomas said. "You can get up in the morning, start the car and just drive. The best thing you can do for emissions is to not idle your car."
In partnership with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, WSU researchers also teamed up with Utah State University to study cold starts, idling and their connection to emissions from 70 models of cars that are typical of those

Do it in Albuquerque and your car will be on it’s way to polluting in Mexico in 30 seconds.
I was kinda counting on it to change the climate inside the car.
Can’t get more oxymoronic than that. If “climate change” were occurring, then no need to warm up the car because the weather won’t be cold. Or something.
Better watch out or Al will come to your house.
SHUT UP AL GORE!!!!
LOL
If al.gore.can fly his jet then I can warm up my car
I know, right? To make it more comfortable for the drive to spend all day generating tax dollars.
Ummm. . .but what about the stress on the moving parts of the car causing it to break down sooner and go to the junk yard, plus the damage to the environment of replacing cars more often, (or is making steel now organic and non-polluting?). . .you cannot look at one statistic all on its own and arrive at a sane conclusion. That is how the left does sooooooo much damage with it’s “scientific” information.
So they did double blind studies on wear, maintenance, useful life of engine AND transmission, and ran these studies for years?
I didn’t think so
Send the author of this idiotic piece of journalist dribble the mechanic bill due to running a dry engine, since warming the car engine is desolidifying the lubricants in the crankcase.
It is obvious that environmental science does not include a course in basic thermodynamics ...
Of course it does. So does people breathing and heat at KSL Broadcasting. Shut it down.
I’ll start the car, walk down to the post office and back, maybe drink a cup of coffee before I decide I’m ready to leave.
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know how I can contribute to the end of mankind.
I’ll be sure to double, no triple, my output!
Good! The climate is f****g cold. Warm it like a boss.
Insanity rulesð.
Right.
Delta should not allow it’s jets to idle at the gate.
They should usher seat holders into cold fuselages at SLC International...
Dolts!
Get back to me in two years when your engine blows up.
