Here is the 9th Circuit Appeals Court decision on the Hammond case. It cites the law under which they were sentenced. It also details the "arsons" which include damage of one acre by fire of BLM land in two occasions plus the escape of the fire that burned the 139 acres. http://cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/opinions/2014/02/07/12-30337.pdf
Section 844(f) which they were sentenced under was amended on April 24, 1996, by the Antiterrorism Act of 1996, to exclude Federal jurisdiction for offenses against institutions or organizations receiving Federal assistance. Additionally, the subsection was subdivided and a system of tiered penalties created according to the type of injury caused by a violation of this subsection. Where injury is limited to buildings, vehicles or other real or personal property owned, possessed or leased by the United States, this is a felony punishable by a sentence of imprisonment for not less than five years or more than twenty years, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

“It is interesting that the Appeals Court lists various other incredible sentences for relatively minor offenses to justify their action. Amazing reading. “
In my opinion the entire concept of punishment has gotten out of hand. In California, the only state I could find the numbers for, six million people have had their driver’s licenses revoked for failure to pay government fines. I personally know people in Florida who have had the same happen to them. These are people already on the margin. The ones I know didn’t pay because it was food for the kids or high fines for...not properly wearing a seat belt and burning trash, which is illegal in this county but not the county they came from, so they didn’t know.
I won’t argue the point that the charges are not true. I argue the point that the -justice- system took away their right to earn a living and put them on welfare because of a few hundred dollars in fines. Where is the sense in that?
How do people who have had their driver’s license revoked get their kids to the hospital? By ambulance. Just call 911. That’s happened about five times last year. What did that cost the taxpayers? This is crazy.
Just so you know, in Florida, after they magically earn enough money to pay the fine and the 40% penalty, they owe a $495 driver’s license reinstatement fee. If they couldn’t pay the $250 fine how will they pay the reinstatement fee?
what was the sentence for the guy that set fires in 2014 in San Diego County?

This video made last summer shows FED crews deliberately lighting fires that burned homes and barns and killed cattle. They don’t even try to hide or disguise their actions. Of course, the evidence was not allowed at the second Hammond trial and the media isn’t interested.
