Representative Jim McDermott, Democrat of Washington and one of the most liberal members of the House, announced Monday that he would retire at the end of the year, ending a tumultuous 14-term congressional career.
âI love representing the people of the Seventh District because they inspire me to pursue and achieve public policy goals that improve the lives of all Americans,â he said in Seattle.
âI am proud of what we have been able to do together for Seattle and the State of Washington,â said Mr. McDermott, who serves on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, where the Affordable Care Act, which the House is set again to vote to repeal this week, was partially conceived.
âNot surprisingly, not everything has worked out as I had hoped, but, on balance, I will leave the Congress with few regrets,â he said.
Mr. McDermott, 79, is a psychiatrist who served in the Navy treating soldiers and sailors returning from the Vietnam War and later as a Foreign Service medical officer stationed in Zaire. He has represented Seattle and the surrounding communities in the House since being elected in 1988.

Is he the dork with the bicycle pin?
Is he the dork with the bicycle pin?
I’m surprised that the Times didn’t hero-worship him as a “liberal lion” like they do most of the Communist zealots who retire after an entrenched, overly-long career in Congress.
The Good New: he’s retiring
The Bad News: Seattle voters will choose his replacement
30 freakin’ years!
Just think of how much DAMAGE this A88hat has caused.
They should be selling out of Garrotes at Wally World.
The crook has stuffed his pockets with enough taxpayer money, Leftist bribes, and campaign cash that he can retire comfortably and live off the filthy lucre he’s amassed.
Bicycle pin? He was caught illegally taping cell phone conversations to leak to the media, iirc.
Out with the old socialist, in with the new.
Jim M#dermott who had the elderly couple overhear a cell phone conversation of Newton Gingrich...that guy. Send him to Cuba!
This is incredible news! Now if only Patty Murray would join him.
‘The crook has stuffed his pockets with enough taxpayer money, Leftist bribes, and campaign cash that he can retire comfortably and live off the filthy lucre heâs amassed.’
So true. Still, he’ll be gone. Think of the rest of the lifers. Cochran is still in, though he got lost in the Capital building on his first day back from stealing the election in Mississippi (i.e.: senility). Isaakson is running for reelection though he has a serious chronic health issue. Ted Kennedy hung on till he died in office. Etc.
Better if more of them retired, even if it does mean more time to enjoy their ill gotten gains.
Well, I don't know about the bicycle pin, but....
He tried to pass legislation requiring port commissioners to study the feasibility of building a cross state conveyer belt here in Washington. It might not have been the worst idea in the world except that anything that the government gets its hands into turns into a huge boondoggle.
Jimbo, don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out!
Send him to hell.
He is one of the liberals who flew to Baghdad before the war to try to prevent the invasion.
.....is a psychiatrist who served in the Navy treating soldiers.....
It always seemed as if Bagdad Jim needed a psychiatrist.
I could be banned if I write what I thought of you, so I’ll say ‘Good Bye, A**HOLE!’
