Ted Cruz has to win the Iowa caucuses.
Not because there's something magical about Iowa or its predictive powers.
No, Cruz can't afford to lose in Iowa because he's already predicted, unequivocally and without reservation, that he will win Iowa. And while Cruz is in so many ways an unconventional politician, there are certain immutable rules in politics.
One is that falling short of expectations in Iowa or New Hampshire is bad.
"He will win Iowa. We're very confident he will win Iowa," Cruz campaign co chairman Chad Sweet declared last month.
It's a bold prediction, though not outside the realm of possibility.
By mid December, Cruz had already overtaken billionaire Donald Trump in Iowa.
And to cement his lead, he embarks Monday on a six day barnstorming tour that includes stops in 28 of Iowa's 99 counties. That will bring him close to a "full Grassley", a feat he vowed last June to complete. It's named for U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican who makes it a point to visit every county in the state each year.
Lots of these counties have more livestock than voters, and that's not just a saying. The last U.S. census counted 6,462 people in Osceola County, the least populous on Cruzâs itinerary this week, and the last U.S. Agriculture Department report showed 38,500 head of cattle.
Turnout in the big cities of Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport will overshadow even a landslide in such a tiny pocket. But from Muscatine to Spirit Lake, it warms an Iowan's heart to know that a potential president cares enough to try.
Cruz certainly has put more effort into the state than most. He has volunteers in every county. He's rented a college dorm outside Des Moines for Texas supporters to live in when...

Well, nobody expected anything better from you.

Some one posted to you that gay marriage was a sin, and you said he was “beset by demons”— Isn’t that true??? — or should I go back and get your post?
I guess if you are gay, you will.
The strictly evangelical support eventually hits a wall and thins out. Then you're running on fumes to have banked your whole case for only evangelicals.
Trump will expand the Iowa caucus vote much more than their usual 5% of the electorate. Add 10s of thousands more new voters and the evangelicals won't be enough, although, Trump still gets a big share of them.
This is a rare and historic thing we're seeing in TRUMP. I pray nothing kills this GOD-sent opportunity. There will never be another one in my life time. It would be right back to business as usual cronyism.
Yep a guy like Trump is a rare opportunity.
Come on, man up. You know what you want to tell the “rubes” on the Board. Instead, you hide in the weeds....lacking the courage and integrity to say what you really feel.
You proud of yourself?
He has to be sent by God.
Where is that gay post of mine you promised?
Not going to doubt it. :-)
Did you say it? Did you say in response to the fellow who said gay marriage was a sin- “you’re beset by demons?”
Easy enough to deny.
You are making stuff up. Where is the post you promised to post? Are you insane?
Are you denying you said it? If you didn’t, just deny it.
Show me. You said you have the evidence. Where is it?
You know you can’t deny it. Then just say straight out that you are against gay marriage-— that would do it.
I won’t let a liar off that easy.
Hey Vet, nice of the Donald to hold a "pep rally" for Ted in MississippiOh, you mean this town hall in Mississippi tonight?
Absolutely. I have NO reason to believe Cruz takes Iowa in a walk, just because he and the media owned pollsters are saying that. I agree with you. I’d have to see it to believe it, but either way, I can’t get excited over IOWA.
Cruz is hounding that vote too much, appearing more than a little desperate really, and he may experience a backfire, the way it sounds out there.
Now, New Hampshire, I am paying attention to that kick off.
What? Which is it?
âHow long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.â (1 Kgs. 18:21)
When Trump says (as he did in Mobile a month or so ago) that the Bible is his favorite book and mentions Billy Graham who was he courting? Trump then holds his own book in the one hand after taking about how great he is and promoting his own book. I never saw him produce that great book he said was his favorite. But I did hear him proclaim he had never asked forgiveness. He said he tried to live his life so to never need to ask forgiveness. Tell me, how well has that worked for you? Me, I need forgiveness daily.
Why vote for someone that fruits show are supporters that spit at you. If Trump wins the nomination, he can do it without my vote, I had rather write someone in that be spit at.
P.S. Check my tagline out before you suggest I will be voting for Hillary if I don't vote for Trump. I will be voting, but voting to show if you disregard the Christian vote, don't expect it to blindly follow you like a mindless puppy.
Praying for the death of the evangelical vote.. SMH
Are you for or against gay marriage... simple question.
Come on, Spoonner, you’re a man of conviction, deep principles— tell the FR rubes what you really feel about gay marriage. You want to say it... I know it...just do it.
Show some courage.
Yep- future Cruz voters, every one.
Everybody is still waiting, liar.
