Trump muses about losing Iowa
Politico ^ | 12/29/15 | KYLE CHENEY

Donald Trump seemed to come to terms Tuesday with an unfamiliar prospect: He might lose in Iowa, the first state to weigh in on the Republican presidential nominating contest.

At a campaign rally in Council Bluffs, Trump ran through a list of polls showing him leading the Republican race nationally and also in the Hawkeye State, which holds caucuses on Feb. 1. But he also noted that a handful of polls have shown him "very close" in the state, presumably trailing Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has begun a steady surge there.

"If I come in second by 2 points, they'll say 'Ooh, this is a terrible defeat,'" he said, referring to media and pundit pronouncements. "It's not terrible." It seemed like a classic case of expectations-setting common to presidential campaigns, but rarely seen from Trump, who has consistently led both in national and early-state polls. He heaped praise on Iowa's first-in-the-nation status and warned of political plots to bump Iowa "to the back of the pack" in future primary seasons. He said that if he wins, he'd ensure that Iowa remains the first state to hold a nominating contest.

It comes as he foreshadows a sustained ad blitz - at least $2 million a week - in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He also told Iowa rally-goers to expect him to be there so often "You're going to get so sick of me."

"I really want to win Iowa," he said, adding, "We're going to give it our best."

Trump's comments came toward the end of a typically free-wheeling speech that ran more than an hour and featured an accusation that the Obama administration makes it more difficult for Christian foreigners to get into the country than Muslim foreigners.

"We take only the Muslims," he said. "We don't

I think Iowa in a make-break contest for a lot of them.

Not for Trump. But if he wins there handily, then I think it’s over.

It is a big race. That is for sure.

If Cruz wins, it will be funny to watch the liberal media squirm as they pretend to rally behind Cruz as they try to declare Trump dead. I like Cruz and I like Trump. I wish them both good luck.

First supporting ethanol and now this. Who says Trump isn’t a politician? He can pander with the best of them.

He mentions that we don’t take in Christians. Just muslims.

He’s right.

I like Cruz very much and I like Trump. Fellow NYer.

It’s already December. wow! went fast.

Can’t see that lead being overtaken.

Would love to see NY number w/ Trump vs. hitlery. can’t find any.

I know Ted couldn’t beat her here

I think Trump will win NY in the general.

He will come close to winning CA. Close, but I don’t think he takes CA..,.. if he did...whooo boy!

Did a workup last night.

Californian’s cast 12,750,000 votes in 2012. (ballpark within a few hundred thousand votes)

Romney lost by 23% there. Trump would only need to flip 1,550,000 (ballpark again within 20,000) votes or so out of 12.75 million.

That is doable.

Trump has this uncanny ability to draw people in, and I think he plays well in California.

I’m calling it for him. Did so about a month ago. May have done it earlier, but I documented it for myself then.

I’ve already put down a guesstimate on the November 2016 election results for the Presidency.

It’s a landslide.

Did you read yesterday's N.Y. Post? Fred Drucker had a great column about Trump !

If you didn't read it, yes, Trump WILL beat Cruz in their primary and the N.Y. GOP are gearing up for Trump to beat Hillary in N.Y. !

It's still very early, but no, Cruz can't beat Hillary in N.Y., state, but there IS a chance that Trump; can, if one takes upstate, the burbs, the Jewish communities ( the Hasidim ), Harlem ( of all places ), the Islan into consideration .

If Trump gets blown out in Iowa by Cruz it’s going to be interesting how he handles it. He’s not used to losing.

The end of that last sentence — “We take only the Muslims,” he said. “We don’t take the Christians. If you’re Christian, it’s almost impossible to get into this country.”

You are IMO correct about the landslide for Trump.

I pray daily for his safety!

Seriously.... we all need to keep him in our prayers!

I’m still not sure whether Cruz will trounce Trump, or the other way around.

We shall see. Could go either way, thus far.

I like what Trump is saying. He recognizes and lays stake down that it is NOT Iowa or bust. He’s a survivor. Good to see he recognizes the need to engage more in Iowa. My guess his he lowers expectations, exceeds everyone’s expectation, and comes out the Golden Child. But, even if Cruz wins, which I doubt, despite the media hype to create that outcome, Trump has the next ones through Super Tuesday or whatever they want to call it this election cycle. The polling in every other state, including Texas, puts Trump on top, no one else even remotely close.
