If Taylor Swift ever believed she had bad blood before, boy does she have it now. Over her birthday weekend, the young queen of pop watched a bomb with her name on it explode after the famed feminist critic Camille Paglia published a shockingly scathing attack on Swift, calling her a blond, elitist âNazi Barbie.â
Yes, such a cheap and sensationalist shot at a fellow female comes from one of Americaâs most well-known and respected feminist writers. Paglia is a self-proclaimed ânotorious Amazon feministâ and isnât exactly your stereotypical bra-burning, Birkenstock-wearing feminist. Her ideology is as nuanced as her interpretation of feminism is hard to pin down.
Nonetheless, Paglia is a feminist warrior at heart, fighting for every womanâs right to succeed, thrive and pursue her wildest dreams. Incidentally, Taylor Swift has done just that, becoming the de facto poster child of big-picture feminist philosophy. For Paglia to rip Swift to shreds, even stooping to associate her with fascism, is a lesson in hyperbolic hypocrisy.
Swift is a feministâs dream mostly come true. She is young, smart, self-made, mind-bogglingly successful, in charge and fiercely independent, both in business and in her personal life; she is unmarried and runs her personal brand with an I-make-my-own-decisions attitude. Swift has power, control and command of her life, all the things todayâs young women are told to pursue.
And Swift has a gently rebellious independence of character, too. She doesnât bow to Hollywoodâs pressure to strip and sex-scandal her way to the top, nor does she seem to have let the enormous weight of fame and wealth transform her into a vain, vacuous, self-obsessed starlet. On the contrary, Swift is humble, cheerful and miraculously down-to-earth, and as loyal to her fans as they are to her. Indeed, Swift is the embodiment of Coco Chanelâs

No, she really is top knotch. She’s still wrong, but she is top notch and doesn’t resort to drollery and meme arguments. I never hear an echo of somebody else’s opinion in her essays.
Please don’t badmouth my future wife.
Uh, yeah, “nuanced” ...
I mean -- if Taylor Swift is anything remotely close to the biggest challenge we're facing today, then surely we are in heaven right now.
Taylor Swift is the kind of woman that makes me wish I was still a (young) man.
Paglia is the kind of woman that makes me with I was a bicycle, and she was a fish.
Rush Limbaugh
I withdraw my “pig” comment. It was uninformed, the result of confusion with another pop singer. I attributed (in my mind) comments made by someone else to Taylor Swift, who did not make the comments I was thinking of.
She's also 26 years old and well on her way to a ten figure net worth. Sure wish I was "not smart," just like her.
I met Paglia at a book-signing a few years ago, and if she were the sneering person you describe, I would not have liked her. I found her a pleasant person, as pleasant as can be for someone with strong views, many of which differ from mine. Ironically, her beef with Swift is that Swift was purportedly advancing a sneering, insolent brand of feminism in the particular video to which Paglia was referring.
I do not worship either youth or wealth. Apparently you do.
Looking at the two of them, clearly Paglia is am embittered, venomous shrew. She is jealous that after a lifetime of producing what she considers serious and important research, the younger, livelier and popular Swift is more quotable.
I had occasion to speak once with a Nashville record producer ( a very small fish) who had the opportunity to hear one of Taylor Swift’s original demos before she was first signed. He confirmed that she needed the autotune, and we have all heard the live rendition of her early songs, which could get “pitchy,” but even Nashville singers train and take lessons constantly, and more recent live appearances show that she probably has no need for the help any longer.
Plus, she is HOT in Tim McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care” video.
Millions of young girls love Taylor Swift but no-one loves Camille Paglia.
Not really. But music is a cut throat business. The fact that she figured out how to call her own shots at an early age -and has been spectacularly successful while doing so -is a clear sign that she's no dummy.
Taylor Swift IS fairly flat chested! She is a very natural beauty, not all siliconed up.
I don’t know why you are siding with Paglia. Paglia PROBABLY supports Hillary. Hillary got everywhere she is by clinging to a man. Marrying Bill to get the two of them into the start of politics, then using Hubbell’s sperm to get her back into AR’s good graces, then using the First Lady platform to basically control a lot of the White House, then running for Senator on the height of her Scorned Woman Meme after Bill and Monica.
Taylor Swift did it all herself, starting as a child in high school! And people actually like Taylor. She doesn’t lie nor does she carelessly kill people.
Now, that’s real fair, comparing the looks of a woman in her 20s to those of a woman in her late 60s. If I’m ever on trial, I hope you aren’t in the jury.
.
Paglia is a bitter dyke.
Taylor Swift is totally real, self made, clean, productive, and normal.
Everything Paglia is not. She is jealous. Paglia is a media creation. There is no there there.
I do not know Taylor Swift. I have only heard a blurb or two about her and she seems like a decent pop star that puts out her bubble gum music and people really enjoy her work.
IF I were Taylor Swift’s confidant all I would advise her to say is...
“Hey Camille. This is my bank account from making pop music that make people happy. What have you accomplished?”
Or better yet Limbaugh’s undeniable truth #24 “ Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society”
Taylor Swift ain't.
