If Taylor Swift ever believed she had bad blood before, boy does she have it now. Over her birthday weekend, the young queen of pop watched a bomb with her name on it explode after the famed feminist critic Camille Paglia published a shockingly scathing attack on Swift, calling her a blond, elitist âNazi Barbie.â
Yes, such a cheap and sensationalist shot at a fellow female comes from one of Americaâs most well-known and respected feminist writers. Paglia is a self-proclaimed ânotorious Amazon feministâ and isnât exactly your stereotypical bra-burning, Birkenstock-wearing feminist. Her ideology is as nuanced as her interpretation of feminism is hard to pin down.
Nonetheless, Paglia is a feminist warrior at heart, fighting for every womanâs right to succeed, thrive and pursue her wildest dreams. Incidentally, Taylor Swift has done just that, becoming the de facto poster child of big-picture feminist philosophy. For Paglia to rip Swift to shreds, even stooping to associate her with fascism, is a lesson in hyperbolic hypocrisy.
Swift is a feministâs dream mostly come true. She is young, smart, self-made, mind-bogglingly successful, in charge and fiercely independent, both in business and in her personal life; she is unmarried and runs her personal brand with an I-make-my-own-decisions attitude. Swift has power, control and command of her life, all the things todayâs young women are told to pursue.
And Swift has a gently rebellious independence of character, too. She doesnât bow to Hollywoodâs pressure to strip and sex-scandal her way to the top, nor does she seem to have let the enormous weight of fame and wealth transform her into a vain, vacuous, self-obsessed starlet. On the contrary, Swift is humble, cheerful and miraculously down-to-earth, and as loyal to her fans as they are to her. Indeed, Swift is the embodiment of Coco Chanelâs

Perhaps not as you think.
Paglia is a huge Madonna fan...that should tell you something
Hear, hear!
Reckon Paglia could possibly be jealous ‘cause she can’t
sing and rake in the big megabucks that Taylor Swift
does? (I don’t know Paglia. She might sing. I dont’ know)
Catfight!
This is somewhat surprising. I recall Paglia writing a wonderful defense of Sarah Palin at the height of the PDS war on successful, conservative women.
Taylor Swift is not smart; Camille Paglia is smart.
Wow! What happened to Camille? She used to sound sane a good part of the time.
Associate with the hate-filled Left and you go brain dead.
Paglia was quite attractive in her day. I don’t blame her for getting older.
“Nazi Barbie” is the comment from the smart one?
Are you drunk?
I think I replied in an original post some weeks back:
This is what bitterness looks like. I’ve loved Camille Paglia columns over the years. She’s like the only feminist I can understand.
But why would you pick on somebody not even supposed to be on your radar screen? And of all topics for being beautiful and successful. Please tell me how she has failed?
All one needs for an explanation here is to look at the two of them. The reason for the outrage becomes quite obvious.
"It's the same, old song..."
Fixed
From a long time Camille fan, that was a pretty bitter column. Perhaps Taylor is open game because she’s a cultural figure, but you have to compare it to a Nazi Barbie? That just makes you a Banana republic Barbie.
No one who uses the phrase “Nazi Barbie” to describe a pop singer is a “top notch essayist.”
Taylor is a pig.
Wow Steve. Did she steal a boyfriend from you or something?
No matter how much I trust somebody, I would never ever give a blanket agreement until I reviewed the circumstances.
Aging is not the issue — it her sneering. She wears it in every picture of her I can find.
