During a particularly heated moment during the fifth Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, Ted Cruz outlined how the USA Freedom Act allowed anti-terrorism officials to actually look at more phone data, only they needed a warrant. During the exchange, he mentioned some specific numbers and stats concering the NSA surveillance program. Immediately, a senior staffer for the Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence used her Twitter account to imply Cruz compromised national security.
Here's the tweet:
Cruz shouldn't have said that. — Becca Glover Watkins (@beccaglover) December 16, 2015 |
The next day, after initially saying he would investigate whether Cruz had in fact released classified information, Senator Burr in a joint statement with Senator Dianne Feinstein, the ranking member of the committee, stated the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was not going to investigate Cruz's comments or any other comments from the debate.
This ultimately lead to a group called the Veterans for a Strong America to announce their intent to file an ethics complaint against Ms. Glover Watkins, along with calls for her immediate dismissal.
Vets for a Strong America’s stance is two fold: first, in her position as communications director for the Chairman of the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Glover Watkins has a professional duty to tell the truth and a heightened duty to follow the law with regard to classified information. Given that last night Glover Watkins was seemingly willing to either a) re-disseminate classified information for political purposes, or b) to lie about a member of the United States Senate, we are demanding her immediate removal from the position of communications director. We are further filing an Ethics Complaint regarding her conduct in this matter.
Veterans for America went on to outline how they wish the committee would focus its energies on Hillary Clinton's "home brew" server that has compromised national security. They also expressed their displeasure in Senator Marco Rubio.
Lastly, VSA is disappointed in the behavior of Senator Marco Rubio for lying about a fellow Senator and using an issue as important as national security to achieve a political objective. More often than not, Senator Rubio looks less like a serious Member of Congress, and more like John McCain’s personal Senate mini-me, parroting Gang of 8 talking points. VSA will not stand by while Senator Rubio continues to distort the strong national security record of Senator Ted Cruz.
Conservative Review Editor-in-Chief Mark Levin also is concerned about the Rubio camps' "Alinsky tactics" and attacks on Ted Cruz's national security record. You can read his take here.
Ethics complaint will go nowhere. How does she know the information is classified? If it was didn’t her tweet also violate the classification by confirming it?
The ethics complaint should be filed against Burr for his comments to reporters, not a staffer for her tweet.
I think it is safe to say that after the way the former SOS handled state secrets, there are no classified state secrets.
Cruz needs to sue the ho.
” If it was didnât her tweet also violate the classification by confirming it?”
That is what the ethics complain is contending.
Laz? Your expert input is needed in this thread. ;)
However, Senator Burr's subsequent press release that he was going to have his staff investigate whether Cruz had released classified information (which he quickly backtracked from) could raise grounds for an ethics complaint.
Seems strange that a PR staffer would have the necessary security clearance to even know if Cruz crossed the line. Hmmmm.........
Is she supposed to be some sort of caped cruzader?

Yep,get her some short skirts, some fake breasts, glam makeup, and she will be ready to host a daytime show on Fox.,
That’s a VERY old photo of her. She does not look anything like that now.
I see she managed to get John McCain into the picture, that senile old goat.
I dunno - it depends if the presumed patent leather boots are thigh high
burr is my Senator and I despise him! I am ashamed of him and of my voting for him!
That is not an area that I wish to venture into to pontificate on, I leave that to the experts like Laz.
