Obama meets Bloomberg as he prepares order on guns

As his administration prepares an executive order tightening access to guns, President Obama met Wednesday with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a proponent of new gun laws who has become the chief enemy of the National Rifle Association.

Obama has met with many gun control advocates in recent weeks as his aides complete work on a potential order expected to expand background checks on gun sales by closing the so-called "gun show loophole."

A timeline on the order -- which has been tangled in legal and administrative questions -- is still unknown.

The White House said Wednesday evening that Obama and Bloomberg "discussed ways to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have access to them and what more could be done at the state and local level to help address gun violence in America.""

In the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut, the group morphed into Everytown for Gun Safety, which pushed for new laws in cities and states across the country. Bloomberg poured millions of his own fortune into the group, which helped fund campaigns of pro-gun control candidates.

The organization was meant as a counter to the NRA, whose ratings play large role in contests around the country, and whose funding has helped propel pro-gun candidates into office.

Bloomberg's group had a mixed record in supporting candidates in the 2014 midterm elections, but the former mayor has nonetheless pledged to spend millions backing down-ballot candidates in 2016.

You said: "I've been vacillating back and forth on what I predict the order will be. My common sense says it will be smallish."

Obama has already said he wants to increase (go deeper) background checks. I'm sure this executive order will authorize getting medical records sent to the ATF to put someone on the "can't buy a gun" list and that would show up when your background is checked when you try to buy a gun. If you have ever taken a med for depression, for instance, you can't buy a gun. There will be a list of drugs that will disqualify your buying a gun.

Someone I know went to the doctor a few days ago and had to fill out a new form. Questions about your physical condition was on there - like, "Have you fallen in the last six months?" "How many times have you fallen?" "Do you use a cane or a walker?" Do you have stairs in your house?" "Do you take a medicine for depression?" On and on the questions went. This person handed the form to the office person and she immediately put it in a fax machine and off it went. He asked where she was sending it, and she said to Medicare.

I guarantee you, Medicare, on new orders from Obama, would send that info. to the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).

Now, I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago to get pills renewed, general checkup, and I did not have to fill out a new form, so I think this is a new form that has just been required.

If you get such a form, maybe you don't want anything on there that would raise a flag. Think about what you check before you check it. If it is only Medicare right now, it is very possible, with these new Obama orders, ALL people will have to complete a new form that instantly gets sent to Obama's ATF.

Now, if the ATF decides you can't buy a gun, will they come get the ones you have now? Certainly, never check on a form that you have a gun. I know you don't have any right now because that canoe tipped over and you lost them. You were really stupid to put your guns in your canoe, so I can't help you get them back, but I can call you stupid for doing such a thing. If you did that, you had better buy some more right now, before Obama's new rules come out.

Another regulation to ignore.

Marcella, one of the hallmarks of this administration is that they float stuff for quite a while and very specifically, to get the citizens used to (whatever).

The float on this one is the 50-firearms-per-year trigger that takes a person from an individual, to a dealer (and requiring an FFL).

It would be very out of character for this admin to launch a regulation that has not been floated for a while. Not saying it cannot happen, am saying it is unlikely.

As I suspected, there is no loophole. Just as a semi-automatic rifle is not a military assault weapon.

Ya. I agree. Still it was nice to slap in the face with this. Especially when Democrats were rotten to the core about it.

I would bet a month’s salary that 90% of Libs don’t have any idea what any gun law does, or doesn’t do. They just want more.
