Key Largo (United States) (AFP) - Extreme high tides have turned streets into canal-like swamps in the Florida Keys, with armies of mosquitoes and the stench of stagnating water filling the air, and residents worried rising sea levels will put a damper on property values in the island chain.
On Key Largo, a tropical isle famous for snorkeling and fishing, the floods began in late September.
While people expected high tides due to the season and the influence of a super moon, they were taken by surprise when a handful of streets in the lowest-lying neighborhoods stayed inundated for nearly a month with 16-inches (40-centimeters) of saltwater.
By early November, the roads finally dried up. But unusually heavy rains in December brought it all back again.
"Like a sewer," said Narelle Prew, 49, who has lived for the past 20 years in her four-bedroom home on Adams Drive, a waterfront lane lined by boat docks.
Residents have signed petitions, voiced anger at community meetings and demanded that local officials do something, whether by raising roads or improving drainage.
Sometimes, they clash over whether the floods are, or are not, a result of man-made climate change.
"We get vocal residents who show up and argue," said Dottie Moses, president of the Island of Key Largo Federation of Homeowners Association, who has never seen such high waters -- or high tempers -- in her 30 years of living here.
"There seems to be a mix of responses -- whether they think it is sea level rise, and what they think the government should be doing about it."

What the government should be doing about rising sea levels? Gee, I wonder if those people vote Democrat? /sarc
But, but...I thought voting for Obama would lower the seas!!!!!
I don’t believe the sea levels are rising.
Prove it, and by how much.
Surprised by street floods in the Florida Keys? Bless their hearts.
Does Florida swampland ever sink?
“Gee, I wonder if those people vote Democrat?”
It’s Key West. They once declared independence from the United States, proclaiming the “Conch Republic”. Jimmy Buffett is their spokesman, along with Ernest Hemingway as their patron saint.
Alcohol was involved.
it’s bush’s fault
Well, great news folks. Obama fixed the whole climate change problem last week with his historic Paris agreements. If that doesn’t fix it, please contact Obama directly.
When Mr. Mercat and I were climbing the hill to our home for the 5000th time we talked about how happy we are that we live on a hill. We have a view from our raised deck of the skyline over two miles away and across a creek. We have neighbors down the hill who have had their basements flood repeatedly.
I lived three years in Houston as a child and I remember at least two major floods. No basements down there. It never actually came into our house. Someone ran a motor boat down our street once which caused a wake. That was the closest it came. I remember trick or treating barefooted in a clown costume one year. I can’t imagine the rats and snakes not to mention the germs I must have been exposed to. What were my parents thinking?
My home is 458’ above sea level, hence I will take note at 450 foot rise.
Selfish, shellfish, I am going fishing.
The keys could be sinking or Gilligan could be moving the lobster stake further and further out.
Is the problem affecting the whole stretch of the Keys or just Key Largo?
I’m guessing the land is sinking. It would be VERY odd to have high water there - and NOT a little further up the coast where I live. Look at a glass of water and see the water is ever higher on one side of the glass...
Here’s a link that will shed light on this bullsh*t:

Have seen it all before and will see it all again. Have lived on the beach most of my life. When people insist on building on low lying terrain in spite of common sense, they need to suffer the consequences. In all the uproar over the hurricane flooding out New Orleans, the press deliberately omitted saying that OLD NEW ORLEANS DID NOT FLOOD. The original settlers of New Orleans had the sense to build on the high ground. People today generally use their heads for a hat rack.
Maybe there are too many people on the island, and it is sinking...or getting ready to tip over!
They'd probably cry when they're presented with the bill.
Does any one bother to mention that Florida has been sinking for some time now ... what do people expect when the highest point in the Keys - Big Pine - was only 3 feet above sea level?
Your live on a freakin’ island a couple inches above sea level and you are shocked that you get flooding??? Idiots.
These people are in luck!
A huge climate deal was just signed in Paris. This will no longer be a problem.
“Residents have signed petitions, voiced anger at community meetings and demanded that local officials do something,”
About high tides? Maybe they can get Obummer to pass a decree declaring that the tides can rise only 6”.
