The national Republican establishment is preparing for potentially not having a clear winner after the party's 2016 presidential primaries, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
And if front-runner Donald Trump is still ahead at the end, several unnamed "longtime power brokers" reportedly urged the Republican Party to prepare for a floor fight to nominate a more acceptable alternative.
So-called brokered conventions are extremely rare as a consensus candidate typically emerges from each party's primaries with a majority of the delegates.

I will vote for Trump 3rd party. No person the GOPe picks will compel me to vote for that person. Whoever that person might be would be reviled and spat upon forever.
There will certainly be a fight alright... and I mean it.
FUGOPe
I wish trump and Cruz would go ahead now and join forces indie.
Screw the gop
FUGOP!!
Go, Trump, GO!!
Well...goodbye....GOPe....traitors
Best Trump prepare to counter these jelly spineless. Pansy and Pansy Linda and Yeb.
Nah. Rather than tie themselves to each other now as a single point of attack, stay separate and accumulate enough delegates to be able to join forces later (not necessarily on the ticket together; just to keep the GOPe from gaining any traction at the convention).
If Donald Trump is a faux conservative, as some claim, why is the Political Establishment so determined to destroy his candidacy?
the “Let’s Have the GOP elect the Dem again” brigades are busy...busy...busy.....working...working...working...
may they boil in oil (and Mr. Trump is NOT my fave, but still....)
Trump should go third party. I think he could beat Hillary, even still.. Who wants to vote for a woman in a bright orange jumper?
Hey Graham! You might want to study the Bible, the Koran, world history and the founding of America before you make a complete ass of yourself. Oops, too late.
Because they can’t control him.
It seems to me that since Trump has the voters that he actually is in charge of the Republican Party, not these guys who get into office and serve their donors, and not the voters.
If the Republican Party is something other than a political party in business to get people into office to serve the voters, then they CAN just go away, which is what will happen to them if they sabotage Trump
I have been predicting this for weeks now. ITYS
Their primaries are relatively late in the game, but if no one candidate has a majority of delegates by then, these states could be important if they have lots of delegates.
Of course early voters may have already chosen the candidate that happened to be peaking the particular week they decided to mail in their votes (like what happened in Michigan with Romney vs. Santorum).
So even then it might be too late for the GOPe to turn the tide against Trump or Cruz.
I don’t think that would work. In a 3-way in numerous blue/blue-leaning states, Hillary would come out on top. Conversely, in a 3-way in numerous red/red-leaning states, a Trump 3rd party would split the votes with the GOP3 candidate, quite likely giving those states to Hillary, particularly the ones that just lean red or are toss-up states.
