Two convicted killers were charged with murder Tuesday in the August slaying of a notorious California inmate, just days after he was released into the general prison population.

The Sacramento County district attorney’s office charged the pair with killing 71-year-old Hugo Pinell at a maximum security prison east of Sacramento.

Hugo Pinell, 71, was serving two life sentences. He was convicted of a 1964 rape in San Francisco and was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. Months before the attempted 1971 breakout, he killed R.J. McCarthey, a prison officer at Soledad State Prison, and was sent to San Quentin.

In August of that year, Pinell and the other members of what became known as the San Quentin Six — Johnny Larry Spain, Fleeta Drumgo, Willie Tate, David Johnson and Luis Talamantez — allegedly took part in an escape attempt that led to the death of George Jackson, a Black Panther member and founder of the Black Guerrilla Family. Guards shot Jackson to death during the escape attempt, in which two other inmates and three guards also were killed.

During the 16-month trial, Pinell leaped from his seat one day and jabbed his own lawyer in the throat with a ballpoint pen.

Despite his violence — including slitting a San Quentin guard’s throat in 1971 and stabbing another guard at Soledad — Pinell had a dedicated fan club who called him by the nickname “Yogi Bear.”

They revered him as a counterculture icon of the prison revolutionary movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

In 2013, the San Francisco BayView, which calls itself a national black newspaper, printed a tribute to Pinell and described a “Rally for Yogi” held to urge the state to parole him. The tribute calls Pinell, who was born in Nicaragua, “one of the longest held political prisoners” and identifies him as a freedom fighter. The paper also printed a poem for Pinell.

In losing our Brother Hugo Pinell, I lost not only a brother, but a comrade, hero, motivator and educator.

Hey, even jailbirds have standards. Suppose you were in for some petty crime like embezzlement and found out a psycho throat slasher had been moved in. Wouldn’t you want something like this done?

"Both inmates already are serving life sentences for murder, and as a result both now face the special circumstance...."

Oh no, they aren't going to get pudding for dessert tonight. But, they apparently were willing to do what the state was not in putting this dog down.

You bring up a good point. California has no death penalty so how do you punish a Hugo who killed four prison guards?

I have never been one to revel in prison “justice” and I think the white collar small fry is much more likely to be abused in prison than monsters like Pinell.

The interesting point to be made here is this guy is a prime example of why you need to use the death penalty. More prison time added to a life sentence obviously was not a deterrent to the deceased. Now I can say for certain he will no longer be able to kill or harm anyone else.

five life terms plus five hundred years? Something like that gave the Aurora movie killer. Of course I’m being fatuous.

Who would have ever thought that two killers would murder another inmate?

DUH!

I was going to ask if you meant another word. Then I looked up fatuous. Good word. I had heard it, but never seen it in writing. I will use that now.

Thanks for enhancing my vocabulary.

San Quentin is not east of Sacramento - that is Folsom prison.

Cry me a river. I hope the most recent murderers’ reps are elevated while they serve their lives out in solitary. Justice for all.

It's Cali....they don't put down killers.

Our prison system is an industry. Plain and simple.

Our Justice system is and industry. Period.

If we had a system that was streamlined for out and out murderer's...The system wouldn't make money.

Plain. Simple.

California has a death penalty. We lock them up on Death Row until they die of natural causes.

You’re welcome. For some reason I always thought there should be a ‘sh’ sound or something else in there. It looks like: FAT YOU OSE rather than: fa see shush as it’s pronounced.
