The Roman legions began to lose their military effectiveness when the ranks were filled by necessity with non Romans. Most well off Roman citizens avoided service and many early Christians refused to serve as a matter of conscience. A “multicultural” society does not field an effective military. Witness the “Austria Hungary” empire.
The first casualties of the Gulf War were a moslum soldier turning on his fellow soldiers.
