They may well have health issues, but fasting is not the cause. There are tons of scientific data saying that moderate fasting is a "really good thing" for health.

As I understand about "Ramadan-style" fasting, after the 12 hour fast, they binge out. It is probably the binging that does the damage rather than the fasting.

IMHO, since I'm heavily on the nature side of the nature/nurture debate, it makes mental imbalance more likely in the son. It doesn't directly affect the wife, just the son's choice of wife. Like attracts like.

...I think it probable since they procured 2 goats at one time, which is traditional, possibly one to kill at the beginning of Ramadan and the other for the feast at the end.
