Shocker: Avis Car Rental Bars Israeli Executive from Renting
Observer News ^ | November 22, 2015 | Ken Kurson

On Saturday evening, Dov Bergwerk arrived at the Avis branch on West 76th Street and Broadway. Accompanied by his wife Ruth, the Bergwerks were planning to join friends for dinner in Westchester. Mr. Bergwerk, a senior vice president and general corporate counsel at the Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva, got out his driver's license, reservation number and "Wizard" loyalty card - he's rented from Avis dozens of times before - and anticipated the usual smooth transition into a nondescript mid-sized sedan.

That's when the trouble started.

if you don’t have a credit card you have to give a 300 dollar deposit at most rental agencies for a car rental.

I had NO IDEA they even would allow someone to rent a car without a credit card. (As one can tell, I haven’t rented a car in a very long time)

I think it would be super for Jewish persons to start the “I’m offended” and “discriminated against” noise. Or for that matter, any member of any minority. Run the “black lives matter” out of town...Why don’t we turn the tables on them? How about not accepting any credit or employment applications with names like the two manning that AVIS booth and the multitude of others that we see every day? Don’t come back until you have a name that others can pronounce!!!

I just read the Yelp reviews on this location. It’s bad. It describes the kind of service that would have me cursing management. If this is typical of an Avis location, then Avis seriously needs to die.

Glad to find this out as someone hit my car and I need to get a rental while, hopefully, it will get repaired.

I now will scratch Avis off my list of companies I'll check on.

“”You need to read post 8.””

Because? That’s as much of a BS answer as any you would get out of any White House press briefing and you’re saying it should be accepted without question?

Don’t need a Twitter account, but they finally addressed it on twitter. See their FB it said.

Being old school, I don’t have a “smart phone” and I am amazed/dismayed by the social media phenom.

Who said anything about accepting it without question?

How shallow are you?

10 years old?

My God, the self revelation of how stupid some Freepers are is unsettling.

All at Avis responsible for this travesty should be summarily fired.

BtW, unless that happens QUICKY, I will never rent from Avis again. (I travel a lot and rent a lot of cars.)

I like to think Freepers are a cut above the rest of the population, it’s very obvious from this thread that many aren’t.

With the exception of machogirl in post 8, everyone has been as quick as any Liberal condemning a conservative with their condemnation of Avis.

You need to read post 8.

Seesh, how embarrassing.

Ya all ought be ashamed.

I read it. Do you understand what a Wizard number is ? Did you read the following portion of the article ?

Eventually, a manager was called. Shamoura took the side of her reservation agent, also refusing to honor Mr. Bergwerk’s reservation or recognize his documents. Stunned and stranded on a Saturday night in New York, Mr. Bergwerk called the Avis main number and got through to customer service. The representative confirmed to him that the Israeli license was an acceptable form of ID and also mentioned that he could show his passport to ameliorate any ID concerns the on-site employees had. Mr. Bergwerk put the customer service representative on the phone with Shamoura, the branch manager, and at this point the story evolved. She now claimed that she was declining to rent the Bergwerks a car not because of the insufficient documents but because Mr. Bergwerk had “argued about the way I was being treated in front of other customers,” according to Mr. Bergwerk.

According to Avis, “On Friday, a customer seeking to rent a car from Avis Car Rental in Manhattan was not allowed to do so because he failed to provide the required documentation. Visitors to the U.S. from other countries must provide both a valid drivers license from their country of residence as well as either a valid International Drivers License or passport in order to rent from Avis. We are aggressively investigating the customer’s allegations regarding the handling of this matter, as we do not tolerate any form of discrimination. So far, our ongoing investigation suggests that this customer is unfairly maligning us with unfounded allegations.”

https://www.budget.com/budgetWeb/html/en/customer/commonquestions/index.html#What%20kinds%20of%20credentials%20will%20I%20need%20to%20present%20when%20I%20pick%20up%20my%20rental?

Is my regular driver’s license sufficient when I am renting outside my resident country?

Answer: Generally, a driver’s license, passport and an International Driving Permit issued in the driver’s name from their home country is required for most Budget car rentals with the following exceptions:

European Union (EU) residents renting in the EU must present either an International Driving Permit along with the driver’s license from their home country or simply their EU driver’s license.
All other drivers may not be required to present an International Driving Permit when traveling abroad, but they should be prepared to do so. For information on how a U.S. resident may obtain an International Driving Permit, visit the U.S. Department of State Web site. Non-U.S. residents should obtain their International Driving Permit from their home country before traveling.
If your home country’s driver’s license information is not written in the Roman alphabet, you will be required to present an International Driving Permit in order to rent from Budget.

http://www.budget.co.uk/faqHelp.html#

What documents will I need to provide?

All drivers of the vehicle will need to be present and provide a valid driver’s license. After 8 June 2015, all UK drivers collecting their vehicle from one of our UK stores will only need to bring their photo card licence. If UK drivers are renting outside of the UK we recommend for peace of mind visiting the DVLA’s ‘Share My Driving Licence’ portal and bringing along a print out of their licence, which shows current restrictions and penalties.

You must have held a full clean licence for at least one year. An International Driver’s Permit alone is not sufficient for rental - it can only be used in conjunction with a standard driving licence.

You will also need a credit card in your own name. Further identification, such as a passport, may also be required.

Please note that any discounts or vouchers must be presented upon arrival.

It will be interesting to see Avis documentation for their statement.

I’d been so tired of talking to customer service, I’d hired a taxi.

The Teva exec is a lawyer from what I read.

I wonder if Avis rents to people that can’t read the English road signs. I never thought about that. Heck, my family drove in the UK on the opposite side and that would have scared the jeebies out of me. They rented a car. I’m not sure if they got a quick traffic lesson on how one drives on the opposite side.

“The problem is not Avis but the people working in the office.”

Did you read the article? You know the part where Avis corporate doubled-down, pretty much calling the Israelis liars and standing behind their obviously racist employees?
