"Finding Home": Poems In Search Of A Lost America

Considering the Freedom Center’s aggressive political work, poetry may not be something one would expect to find as part of its intellectual arsenal. But as many conservative writers such as Andrew Klavan and myself have noted for years, reclaiming America means reclaiming the culture, and that means engaging in the arts. As Finch writes in his introduction, “[I]f as a people, and a nation, we can return to something lost, recovering something from our culture that has been torn, then it can only happen through art.” The art of Finding Home is Michael Finch’s deeply personal contribution to the culture war.

If anyone knows how I can get a copy of ‘The Haunted Pond’, I would appreciate the help.

I am not familiar with The Haunted Pond.

Can you tell me what it is?

Thank you for posting this. I read the whole review and think I’ll get the book. It’s hard some days to remember my America, our America. And when I do, I get a nearly physical ache for ...the liberty we all once loved that is gone.

I am 70. When my grandfather on my mother's side was a boy, the family would hitch up a horse to a wagon and ride down to Jonesboro, TN on Saturdays for shopping and entertainment. The entertainment consisted of baked treats for sale and recitation shows. My grandfather memorized a long narrative Poem title ‘The Haunted Pond’, perhaps from James Whitcomb Riley -because it has similar rhyme scheme as found in the Mountain Whippoorwill- which features a Mill, a shady Mill pond, and a 'daddy Joe'.

As I recall from my childhood listening to PawPaw recite the poem, it starts, "As I was riding on my way, one July sultry day".

There were other long narrative poems which burbled up from PawPaw's memories, such as Darius Green and His Flyin' Machine', 'Little Orphan Annie', and 'Twenty Froggies', but I would like to find the correct version of The Haunted Pond.

Here is as close as I could come by way of a quick search.

The Loehrs And The Hammonds

Likely not what you are after...a haunted house is mentioned.

Good luck!
