Jonathan Pollard, an American convicted of spying for Israel, is set to be released on parole from a US prison.
The former US Navy intelligence officer, now 61, was caught selling classified documents in 1985 and given a life sentence two years later.
Pollard has been serving his sentence at a prison in North Carolina. His parole terms bar him from leaving the US without permission for five years.
He has said he wants to move to Israel to be united with his second wife.
Successive Israeli governments have tried to secure Pollard's freedom, in a case that has caused tension between the two countries.
Last year it was reported that the US was considering freeing Pollard in exchange for the continuation of peace talks and significant concessions from Israel to the Palestinians......

I've had a sense during the Iran nuclear talks and it was confirmed by the Corker Bill that the fix was in on this Iran nuke deal.
Israel knew the Iran deal was going through and really wasn't opposed to it. AIPAC, the Israel Lobby, will support Senators who supported the deal.
Bibi must have cut a deal with Barry and it looks like Pollard is part of it.
My gut sense is that Israel signed on the alternative policy to deal with Iran in exchange for things like Pollard being let out. The notion of isolating Iran through US-EU-Saudi involvement in the Yemeni and Syrian Civil Wars to take over groups and governments friendly to Iran.
Oops, that policy has led to the creation of Islamic State and the Russian intervention in Syria.
OUTRAGEOUS. Pollard should have been and still should be executed for his treason. Until and unless it is his dead cold carcass, this traitor should remain in the deepest and darkest prison. And then dead, put him out to be spit upon.
In Israel right now the emotional spin on Arutz Sheva, a ‘conservative’ website, is that Pollard’s release will leave him unable to go to Israel (for five years apparently) and put him under other restrictions.
I read your emotions, too, but all the emotions divert from the fact that Israel (Netanyahu) and the Obama Administration have obviously cut a deal to make this happen.
We grassroots conservatives have been led to believe there’s a big feud going on between Israel, led by Bibi Netanyahu, and Barack Obama.
This story tells me there’s been some wheeling and dealing going on in the backroom and a more friendly relationship than we thought.
“Successive Israeli governments have tried to secure Pollard’s freedom, in a case that has caused tension between the two countries.”
Why? He’s American. His usefulness to Israel has run its course, no? Whatever. Hope he meets a bad end. I don’t care if Israel has been an ally of ours. Treason is treason and should be punished as such.
Realeasing Pollard also has an added benefit for Obama - it helps to cause friction between various groups in the US & Israel. Makes me wonder why now? Is something big about to happen?
I guess I forgot (have been having worsening health & stress issues this year) - it came out in July he would be released on this date.
But thanks for trying to make us despair and quit fighting the power.
What a load of Schmalz! We excoriate the Muslims over dual allegiance. Must be a Middle East tribal thing.
The Obama Administration was reported to have said last year Pollard would be released if Israel made ‘concessions’
Things like ‘peace talks’ and ‘the Palestinians’ were mentioned, so the question on the table is what concession or concessions did Netanyahu give to Obama to get Pollard out.
I have been watching Israel and Israeli news for years and I know Pollard’s release has always been a high priority issue for decades.
THIS IS BIG AND IN ORDER FOR IT TO HAPPEN ISRAEL HAD TO CAVE SOMEWHERE.
Ping
Time for the Democrats to start collecting their JEWISH MONEY, I guess.
I guess “Life in prison” doesn’t really mean what it says.
It doesn’t.
I’m certainly not suggesting anyone let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory, but his release date has been known for 30 years, today. His sentence carried a mandatory parole in 30 years. He could only be held if it could be demonstrated he’s a risk to reoffend, or for misconduct while imprisoned.
Bibi must have cut a deal with Barry and it looks like Pollard is part of it.

Early career[edit]
In 1979, after leaving graduate school, Pollard began applying for intelligence service jobs, first at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and then the U.S. Navy. Pollard was turned down for the CIA job after taking a polygraph test in which he admitted to prolific illegal drug usage between 1974 and 1978.[27]
He fared better with the Navy and on 19 September 1979, he was hired by the Navy Field Operational Intelligence Office (NFOIO), an office of the Naval Intelligence Command (NIC). As an intelligence specialist, he was to work on Soviet issues at the Navy Ocean Surveillance Information Center (NOSIC), a department of NFOIO. A background check was required to receive the necessary security clearances, but no polygraph test. In addition to a ‘Top Secret’ clearance, a more stringent ‘Sensitive Compartmented Information’ (SCI) clearance was required.
The Navy asked for but was denied information from the CIA regarding Pollard, including the results of their pre-employment polygraph test revealing Pollard’s excessive drug use.[27] Pollard was given temporary non-SCI security clearances pending completion of his background check, which was normal for new hires at the time. He was assigned to temporary duty at another NIC Department, the Naval Intelligence Support Center (NISC) Surface Ships Division, where he could work on tasks that did not require SCI clearance. NOSIC’s current operations center and the NISC were co-located in Suitland, Maryland.
Two months after Pollard was hired, the technical director of NOSIC, Richard Haver, requested that he be terminated.[27] Pollard had offered to start a back-channel operation with the South African intelligence service and lied about his father’s involvement with the CIA.[27] Instead of terminating Pollard, Haver’s boss reassigned him to a Navy human intelligence (HUMINT) operation, Task Force 168 (TF-168). This office was within Naval Intelligence Command (NIC), the headquarters for Navy intelligence operations (located in a separate building, but still within the Suitland Federal Center complex.)
This may have been due to Pollard’s having a friend from graduate school in the South African intelligence service.[27] It was later discovered that Pollard had lied repeatedly during the vetting process for this position: he denied illegal drug use, claimed his father had been a CIA operative, misrepresented his language abilities and his educational achievements, and claimed to have applied for a commission as officer in the Naval Reserve.[27] A month later Pollard received his SCI clearances and was transferred from NISC to TF-168.
While transferring to his new job at TF-168, Pollard again initiated a meeting with someone far up the chain of command, this time with Admiral Sumner Shapiro, Commander, Naval Intelligence Command (CNIC), about an idea he had for TF-168 and South Africa. (The TF-168 group had passed on his ideas.) After the meeting, Shapiro immediately ordered that Pollard’s security clearances be revoked and that he be reassigned to a non-sensitive position. According to The Washington Post, Shapiro dismissed Pollard as a “kook”, saying later, “I wish the hell I’d fired him.”[28]
