Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Tuesday panned the idea of favoring Christian refugees from Syria over Muslims, delivering a rebuttal to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a GOP presidential candidate.
McCain said using a religious test on Syrian refugees, especially children, makes no sense.
âI donât think any child, whether they are Christian or whether they are atheist or whether they are Buddhist, that we should make a distinction,â McCain said. âMy belief is that all children are Godâs children.â
Itâs a rare example of McCain siding with President Obama, who defeated him in the 2008 presidential election, on a hot-button political topic.
Cruz and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush over the weekend said efforts to resettle refugees from Syria should focus on Christians.
"There is no meaningful risk of Christians committing acts of terror,â Cruz said at a Sunday event in South Carolina, according to The Washington Post. âIf there were a group of radical Christians pledging to murder anyone who had a different religious view than they, we would have a different national security situation."
Bush on Sunday told CNNâs âState of the Unionâ that the U.S. âshould focus our efforts as it relates to the refugees with the Christians that are being slaughtered.â
McCainâs comments Tuesday backed up Obama, who earlier this week called a religious test âshamefulâ and ânot American.â
Bush, however, softened his stance in an interview with Bloomberg Politics on Tuesday.
âThe answer to this is not to ban people from coming. The answer is to lead, to resolve the problem in Syria,â he said.
Noting public worries over the vetting of refugees, he said that âif thereâs any kind of concern, we shouldnât allow people in.â
âBut I donât think we should eliminate our support for refugees,â he added.
McCain said Tuesday âthere should be no litmus testâ for the religious affiliation of refugees as long as they are vetted and determined not to pose a threat.
âAre we going to differentiate children by their religion? I donât think so,â he said.
McCain blamed what he called Obamaâs âfailed, fecklessâ policy in Syria for the violence that has sent hundreds of thousands of migrants flooding into Europe.
âThe decisions by the president of the United States, the commander-in-chief, have put us into this position where weâre fighting over refugees
McCain and friends
When McCain opens his mouth I simply close my ears.
He has said nothing of value in years.
No, it isn't you SOB. You were there to make sure he was elected.
...and right on queue. RINO attacking Conservative...RINO does not attack Liberal.
Coming poll bump for Cruz. Thanks Queeg!
McCain is still working for free as an enemy agent.
Time to retire OUTSIDE of AZ.
Just wait. Islamic State reveals it has smuggled THOUSANDS of extremists into Europe
The Syrian operative claimed more than 4,000 covert ISIS gunmen had been smuggled into western nations â hidden amongst innocent refugees.
The ISIS smuggler, who is in his thirties and is described as having a trimmed jet-black beard, revealed the ongoing clandestine operation is a complete success.
“Just wait,” he smiled
From the guy who assured us we have nothing to fear from Obama administration and that they are honorable people.
Face it American, McCain just wants you dead so that your employer can pay your replacement less per hour. He doesn’t really care who does the killing.
Not a day passes that I don’t kick myself in the ass for voting for that ‘lesser evil’ to get Palin. I am forever cured.
I am so glad he lost. He is every bit as bad as Obama.
Queeg knows the rules. No television time for attacking liberals - that’s why he hasn’t done it in years.
We should admit those most at risk. First, Christian women and children, second, Christian men, third, non-Muslim/non-Christian women and children, fourth, nM/nC men, THEN Muslim women and children, and lastly, Muslim men.
John McCain proves over and over that he is an idiot.
Ditto.
all children are God’s children.
It’s too bad islam doesn’t feel the same way. Islam teaches their children to kill our children while ours are being taught to be tolerant of theirs.
F all so called refuges as they do not belong in OUR country.
” He is every bit as bad as Obama.”
As is Romney. PURE evil.
