In a final statewide TV debate Monday (Nov. 16), Democrat John Bel Edwards and Republican David Vitter began making the closing arguments in a wild gubernatorial campaign that often took on an angry tone.
The two men came out swinging as the debate opened with a question about Syrian refugees; it ended with Vitter making a personal appeal to voters for forgiveness for his prostitution scandal and Edwards making the case that he's the best leader. In between, both men fumed at each other for a series of attacks that each said was a distortion of his record.
It was the last time the candidates had a chance to speak to a statewide audience before voters cast their ballots Saturday.
Vitter, who is trailing in the polls and is closing the campaign with the argument that he's the only true conservative, tried to paint the anti-abortion Edwards as an undercover abortion rights proponent. And he sought to tie Edwards to President Barack Obama -- a frequent tactic he's deployed throughout the runoff -- in his position on Syrian refugees.
"I have a consistent record of standing up to President Obama fighting for border security, fighting for national security," Vitter said during the debate, which was hosted by WVLA-TV at the Dunham School in Baton Rouge. "My opponent has staked out a very different position ..

I just hate people apologizing and asking forgiveness for something they’re probably not sorry about.

Wow! You listen WAY longer than I do, I SLAM as soon as I hear “Hi”, which is enough to tell if it’s a robo call because the tone of a robo call “Hi” is always preternaturally cheery.
If Vitter, with all his baggage, manages to win this race, it will foretell a huge R win next year.
We've already seen signs: The big midterm election last year, the Kentucky governorship and other races this year. If Louisiana is added on to the list...
We'll be talking about a probable blowout next year.

It’s a bit strange this prostitution scandal has become such a big deal in this race - Vitter has run for re-election for Senate since this broke years ago and won in a landslide in the election most recent to the revelations - voters apparently forgave him. Now it gets recycled after another 5 years pass, after he won in a landslide, and people have a problem with it this time around, but not the first time?
if vitter miracliously wins, then the paris attack and the syrian refeguees are what saved him. then we get to hear for the next 4 years on how vitter channeled david duke.
From the primary totals a few weeks ago, if everyone that voted Republican votes for him, then he walks away with it.
But, one of his Repub challengers came out and supported the Democrat.
I would think that since the Dem is so closely tied to obama he doesn’t really stand a chance. And now the moron comes out and says that he would take the Syrian savages. That should be the any and every nail in his coffin.

A lot of liberals who left after Katrina have filtered back in, plus a lot of new techies have come in, attracted by Jindal’s pro-business policies, but bringing their socially liberal ideas with them.
There are people on FR who attack Jindal, and seem to want the Dems back in power in Louisiana. Blanco’s “budget surplus” was actually billions in disaster aid that was in danger of disappearing into democrat pockets, as usual.
New Orleans was a mess two years after Katrina; I finally gave up and left.
Then Jindal got elected. I went back for the 10th anniversary and was astounded at the recovery.
Jindal had used the disaster aid as it was intended—to fix things.
South LA was better than I’d ever seen it, including before Katrina. Business —offshore oil and everything that ties into it—was booming.
The left wants EPA to put oil companies out of business.
Obama was there for Katrina’s 10th, and he was yapping about climate change. The NO paper was pimping his every word.
You’re right, this is a race worth watching.
Yes it is, unfortunately he is doing very well, and has put out some very effective pro-life ads which run once or twice an hour. Pro-life is a very important issue in La., especially in South La. Meanwhile, the sound of silence from the Vitter camp.
La. seems to be having one of its left wing tilts this year. I’ve seen very few bumperstickers. One for Hillary, several for Bernie. Nothing for anyone else.
